Be it known that I, EDWARD E. Fox- WORTHY, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Humansville, in the county of Polk and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spoke-Setting Machines, of which the fOllOWll'lg is a s ecification, reference being had therein to t. e accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an improvement in spoke setters and the object of the inven tion is the provision of a simple, economical and efficient device of this character which can be readily and quickly adjusted for use in connection with wheels of various sizes and by means of which the spokes of a wheel may be quickly and properly positioned in the hub preparatory to being driven home.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof wherein a preferable embodiment of my invention is shown and wherein like references refer to similar parts in the several views.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device showing the same in connection with a spoke which has been set and. is ready for driving, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device in a similar position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A designates the base of my improved spoke setter which may be supported upon a work bench or in any other suitable manner and from which extends upwardly a mandrel 0 upon which is adapted to be socured in the usual manner the hub of the wheel to be operated upon. Secured to the upper side of the base A at one side of the mandrel a is a member B comprising upwardly extending side walls I) the lower portions of which are connected by a plate I/ having a ridge extending medially thereof.
0 C designate a pair of arms the rear ends of which are pivotally connected in any suitable manner to the side walls I) of the member B and the forward ends of which are provided with downwardly curved portions c, the ends of which are connected by a plate 0 preferably formed integral with the arms C C.
D designates a block which is secured upon the base A and is provided with an opening (1 extending vertically therethrough. Slidably mounted in said. opening is a gage bar E which is designed to be held in various positions of vertical adjustment by means of a set screw (1 mounted in the block D. The upper end of the gage bar E terminates in a laterally extending portion 0 with which the upper side of any one of the spokes of the wheel is designed to be brought into engagement when the same is set for driving.
F designates a bifurcated operated lever, the lower ends of the arms of which are pivotally mounted between the lower ends of the downwardly curved portions 0 of the arms C U. Journaled between the arms of the bifurcated operating lever F just above the point of its pivotal connection with the arms C O is a roller F the periphery of which is grooved to receive the under side of the spoke to be set. The roller E is carried by a shaft f the extremities of which project beyond the sides of the arms of the operating lever F and are designed when said lever is moved to a position slightly beyond a vertical to contact with the curved portions 0 of the arms 0 O and thereby limit the move ment of said lever in that direction.
G designates a leaf spring the forward end of which underlies the plate 0 which 0011- nects the forward ends of the arms 0 C and the rear end of which overlies the plate I) of the member B which as has been hereinbeforedescribed is provided with a ridge extending medially thereof. The rear end of the spring G is provided with an aperture 9 therein which is engaged by a J bolt q, the stem of which projects through the base A and has threaded thereon a nut From this construction it will be apparent that by adjusting the nut the tension of the spring G may be varied so that the roller F may be caused to engage the under side of the spoke with any desired degree of pressure.
lhe upward movement of the arms C C due to the spring G when the operating lever E is in its lowered position is limited by means of a bolt H which passes loosely through the plate 0 connecting the forward ends of said arms and through the base .A and has adjustably secured to the lower end thereof a stop h of any desired construction.
In the operation of the device, the gage bar E is first adjusted to the desired height; the operating lever F being in its lowered position. The spoke is then inserted in the proper opening in the hub; the operating letoward said gage bar, and means for adjustver is then raised and moved to the limit of its movement, which causes the roller F to engage the spoke and move the same up into contact with the laterally extending portion 6 of the gage bar E the parts being held in this position by the spring G. The spoke is then driven home, the operating lever F lowered, and the hub of the wheel moved on the mandrel a to the proper position to receive another spoke, when the operation is repeated. Inasmuch as the operating lever when raised is moved forwardly beyond a vertical, it will be apparent that the spring G will hold the same firmly against accidental displacement, as when it is desired to lower the same, it must be first moved rearwardly until beyond a vertical against the tension of said spring.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise form and construction shown in the drawing, as it is obvious that many minor changes might be made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a spoke setting machine, a base provided with means for supporting a hub thereof, a gage bar carried by the base and provided with a portion adapted to overlie the spoke of a wheel secured thereon, a yieldable support secured to the base, a lever pivoted to said support and provided with a spoke engaging portion above the fulcrum thereof, and means for limiting the movement of said lever on its fulcrum.
2. In a spoke setting'machine, a base, a gage bar carried thereby and provided with a portion arranged to overlie a spoke, a spring actuated arm secured to said base, and a lever pivoted on said arm, said lever being provided with means ositioned above the fulcrum thereof adapted for engagement with the underside of a spoke.
3. In a spoke setting machine, a base, a gage bar carried thereby, a spring actuated arm secured to said base, a ever pivotally secured to said arm, and a rollercarried by said lever above the fulcrum thereof.
4. In a spoke setting machine, a base, a gage bar adjustably mounted thereon, an arm pivotally secured to said base, a lever pivotally secured to said arm, a roller carried by said lever above the fulcrum thereof, a spring serving normally to press said arm 1 I I l l ing the tension of said sprmg.
5. In a spoke setting machine a base, a gage bar carried by the base, a spring actuated arm pivotally secured at one end of the base, a leverprovided with a spoke engaging portion above the fulcrum thereof pivotally mounted upon one end of said arm, and means for limiting the forward movement of said lever after it has-passed a ver tical.
6. In a spoke setting machine, a base, a gage bar carried by the base, a spring actuated lever pivotally secured at one end to said base and provided at the other end with a downwardly curved portion, a lever provided with a spoke engaging portion pivoted to the free end of the said arm, and a stop carried by said lever and adapted to engage the curved portion of said arm to limit the movement of said lever.
7. In a spoke setting machine a base, a gage bar carried thereby, a spring actuated lever pivotally secured at one end to said base and provided at its other end with a downwardly curved portion, a lever pivoted to the free end of said arm, a grooved roller carried by said lever, and a stop carried by the lever and adapted to engage the curved portion of the arm to limit the movement of said lever.
8. In a spoke setting machine, a base, a gage bar, an arm pivotally mounted on said base, a lever provided with a spoke engaging portion pivoted above the fulcrum thereof to said arm, a spring normally serving to elevate said arm, and means for limiting the movement of said arm.
9. In a spoke setting machine, a base provided with means for supporting a hub thereon, a gage bar carried by the base and provided with a portion ada ted to overlie the spoke of a wheel securec thereon, a spring actuated arm pivoted to said base, a lever pivoted to said spring actuated arm, a roller carried by said lever above the fulcrum thereof, and means for limiting the swinging movement of said lever on its fulcrum.
