Description

PATENTED MAY 19, 1908.
I 2 SEEETS-SHEET l.
PATENTED MAY 19, 1908 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW G. DICKSON, OF DOLPH, SOUTH DAKOTA.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW G. DIcKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dolph, in the county of Hamlin, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches; and' I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches and has for its object to provide a simple construction of wrench which may be quickly adjusted to any sized nut and may be readily removed therefrom when the nut has been turned, and it is a further object of the invention to obviate the use of screw adjustments and the like, wrenches of this nature being liable to wear and become worthless or useless.
Broadly speaking, the invention resides in the provision of a pair of handles carrying each a jaw, the handles being so arranged with respect to each other that when the wrench has been adjusted to suit a certain sized nut the handles may be grasped to turn the nut, this grasping of the handles serving at the same time to maintain the adjustment of the wrench. More specifically, the wrench comprises a handle having a slotted j aw, a second handle engaged through the slot in the jaw of the first-named handle and provided with serrations or with racks, and teeth formed within the limits of the aw of the first-named handle for engagement with the rack teeth upon the second-named handle. By thus forming the teeth within the limits of the jaw, it` will be seen that a greater range of adjustment may be obtained with fewer rack teeth than will be ossible if the teeth upon the jaw were fol-med outwardly thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the handles of the wrench moved apart to permit of adjustment, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view in detail through the slotted jaw alone.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numerals 5 and 6 denote the two handle members of the wrench and 7 and 8 fixed jaws which are carried at corresponding ends thereof. The j aw 7 of the handle member 5 is slotted as at 8 below its point of junc- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion with the handle 6, and the handle 6 is slidably engaged through the said slot 8 in the jaW 7.
The upper and lower walls of the slot 9 in the jaw 7 are inclined as indicated by the numerals 10 and 11, and formed a't opposite ends of the upper and lower walls 10 and 11 of the slot 9 respectively are teeth 12 and 13 which are designed for engagement with series of relatively oppositely directed rack teeth 14 and 15 respectively which are formed upon the upper and lower edges of the handle 6 of the wrench. Each of the teeth 12 and 13 is determined by the corresponding edge face of the jaw 7 and the teeth are hence located within the limits of the said jaw. Furthermore, the teeth properly speaking do not project directly from the said upper and lower walls of the slot but the said walls of the slot are inclined upwardly as at 16 to the rear edge of each tooth, this construction serving to -strengthen the teeth, as will be readily understood.
From the above, it will be seen that by grasping the handles comprising the wrench, the teeth 12 and 13 will be simultaneously engaged with their corresponding racks and the jaws thus held in adjusted position, and that when the handles 5 and 6 are moved apart, the jaw 7 may be slid upon the handle 6 for the purpose of adjustment.
l/Vhat is claimed as the invention, is
A wrench of the type set forth, comprising a handle member having a jaw at One end thereof, and provided adjacent said jaw on opposite sides thereof with rack teeth, and a second handle member provided at one end thereof with a j aw having an opening therethrough surrounding said first named handle member, said second jaw being provided with site sides of said opening and along the relatively opposite edges thereof, each of said last named teeth projecting inwardly and having straight outer faces and inclined inner faces merging therewith, said opening having its opposite walls, upon which said teeth are provided, formed with inclined faces nerging with the inclined faces of said last named teeth to afford portions of increased thickness for strengthening the same. In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
