PORTABLE HOIS'IING DEVICE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
Application filed October 5, 1905, Serial No. 281,502. Renewed October 21, 1907. Serial No. 398,507.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Gnonen Wasnnvo- TON MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sumter, county of Sumter, State of South Carolina, and (Jnxnnns V. RIoHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Hoisting Devices and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in skids or portable hoisting devices, and consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, comparatively inexpensive, durable, convenient and ellicient device of this char-v acter for use in stores, ware-houses and other places for loading and unloading transporting goods from place to place and for vari ous other purposes.
The above and other objects which will appear as the nature of my invention is bet ter understood, are accomplished by means of the construction illustrated in the aceompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved portable hoisting device Fig. 2 is an elevation of one side of the same, showing in full and dotted lines the two positions in which the pawl and hand lever may be used and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the device.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes our improved skid or portable hoist, which comprises a body 2 mounted upon two supporting wheels 3 and a supporting leg or foot 4. The body 2 which is horizontal, is of T-form, consisting of a longitudinal portion 5 and a cross portion 6. The leg 4 depends from the rear end of the longitudinal portion 5 and as shown, is provided with a circular enlargement or base '7. The supporting wheels 3 are journaled upon the ends of depending portions 8 which are provided at the ends of the cross portion or bar 6. At the rear end of the frame on a level and in longitudinal alinement with the portion or bar 5 is provided a handle 9 of any suitable form and construction by means of which the foot or leg 4 may be elevated to permit the device to be readily moved from'place to place upon the supporting wheels. The frame also comprises a crane arm 10 which, as shown, is of right angular form and proj ects vertically from the rearend of the por tion or bar 5. The frame may be eonstructed of any suitable material and the sizes or proportions of its parts may be varied, as desired.
In order to hoist barrels, boxes, bags or loads of any description upon the frame 2, we provide a hoisting cable or similar flexible element 11 upon the frame 1.0. This cable 11 passes over suitable guides 12 provided upon one side of the crane arm and here shown in the form of grooved pulleys. A hook, grapple or any other suitable load engaging device 13 is attached to one end of the cable 11 and its opposite end is attached to and wound upon a drum 14. The latter is here shown in the form of a wheel or disk having a deep groove in its periphery to receive the cable 11 and also a broad friction surface 15 upon its periphery. Formed upon or secured to said drum is a ratchet wheel 16. The drum and the ratchet wheel are mounted upon one side of the frame upon a pivot bolt or stub shaft 17 which passes through the lower end of the crane arm 10. Pivotally mounted upon the outer end of the bolt 17 is a hand lever 18 which carries a double ended pawl or dog 19. The latter is pivoted at 20, upon the lever and has at one end a short tapered point 21 adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 16 when swung to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, and at its opposite end a curved portion formed with a hook 22 which is adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel, as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2. Retrograde movement of the ratchet wheel and drum is prevented by a locking pawl 23 which is pivoted at 24, upon the frame and adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet 16. To permit the load upon the hook 13 to be lowered gradually, we provide a friction brake lever 25 which is pivoted at 26, upon the arm 10 and has a cam face to engage the friction surface 15 of the drum.
The use and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that by means of this device barrels, boxes, bags and any other objects or articles may be quickly placed upon the frame 2 and transported from place to place, and raised or lowered to permit them to be loaded upon or unloaded from a wagon, truck, platform or the like. The construction is simple and durable, so that it may be manufactured at a small cost and is not likely to become broken or to get out of order.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
If desired the crane arm 10 may have its top 27 adjustably mounted as shown in the drawings, or in any other suitable manner. As shown, the top 27 is pivoted as at 28, and supported by means of a pawl 29. The latter is pivoted upon the arm 10 and has its end engaged with a rack 30 provided upon the under side of the top 27. By mounting the top 27 in this manner, it may be adjusted up or down to vary the range of adjustment of the hoisting apparatus.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
V .A portable hoisting device of the class described having a T-body composed of a cross piece 6 and a bar 5, supporting wheels at the ends of the cross piece, a mast having an opening through which one end of the bar 5 1s extended, said mast being secured to said bar and extending below the same to form a supporting leg, and a hoisting drum and operating mechanism therefor mounted on the mast.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
