METHOD OF MAKING SILICON DIOXID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May'5, 1908.
Application filed. June 13, 1906. Serial No. 321,521.
. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making SiliconDioxid, of which the following is a specification.
I have discovered a new and improved method of making silicon dioxid in a state of extreme comminution.
My process consists of first producing silicon monoxid and then oxidizing this to the dioxid. The reaction may be expressed SiO+O=SiO There are various ways of doing this, one is to blow air through an electric furnace in which silicon monoxid is being produced; a second method is to blow silicon monoxid powder and air through a highly heated tube or through an oxidizing flame. The method of producing silicon monoxid is described in my application Serial Number 238,325, filed December 30, 1904. This method may be described. as consisting in heating a mixture of silicon dioxid and carbon to a critical temperature-above 1,000
degrees centigradeif1 a partiallyfilled 'inclosing chamber.
I claim as my invention The method of producing comminuted silicon dioxid which consists of blowing a dust of silicon monoxid through a heated chamber in which it is oxidized by reaction with an oxidizing gas.
