Be it known-that I, J A Mns LIcK, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, in the State4 of California, have invented anew 'and useful Machine for Gildiug; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan or top view of my improved machine. v

My invention has for its object to furnish a simple and convenient machine for gilding, by means of which the surface to be gilded may be applied to the goldleaf while in the book, thus rendering the ordinary cutting and handlingl of the gold-leaf wholly unnecessary; and
It consists in the construction and combination of the different parts of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the table, to which the other, or operating parts of the machine are attached.
Bare arms, by which the surface to be gilded is held, and which are pivoted at their rear ends, by the rod 0 to the supports, or bearings D, attached to the table A.
The arms Bare connected to each other by the rod E, so that they may all move together.
The middle arm B is adjustable, and may be slid back and forth along the rods O and E, to adj ust it to the length of the surface'to be held for gilding, and is secured in place, `when adjusted by the set-screw F, as shown in gs. l aud3.
G are catches attached to the lower side of the arms B, to receive and hold the ends of the plate, the surface of which is to be gilded.l
His a lever, pivoted, at or near its middle part, in .a'groove in thennder side of the arms B, and the position of which is adjusted by the set-screw I, so -as to hold the plateto be gilded at the desired inclination.
J is a long screw passing through the three arms B, and 'swivelled to the outer arm, or arms B, so Vthat by turning the said screwJ in one or the other direction, the middle arm B may be moved back and forth, to adjust it in the desired position.
K is a block, to whichrthe gold-leaf book is attached, and which is-l made with'arib, or tongue upon its lower side, which enters and slides along the rack L, so that the block, and, consequently, the book, may be adjnsted inthe desired position.
Upon the lower part of the forward edge of the block K is cut an inclined groove, as shown in g. 5, to receive the catches M, which are pivoted in recesses in the rack L, to hold the block K in its exact position.
The catches Mjare held forward in working-position by the coiled springs N, and may be withdrawn from the block K, to enable it to be moved back and forth, or adjusted by pressing upon the knobs 0,'connected with said catches, and proj ectiu g from the forward edgeV of the rack L.
When the book-block is properly adj usted, the blank leaves of lsaid book are Aturned back, and are held by the forward ends, or hands of the arms P, the rear ends of which are hinged to supports attached to the table A, and which are held down with the requisite pressure to hold the said -blank leaves, by the springs Q,
pressing upon their upper sides, as shown in figs. l, 2,
and 3.
B is a board, pivoted at or near its rear edge to supports attached to the table A, so that its forward end may be raised, to raise the forward ends of all the arms P at the same time.
To the under side of the board R is attached a rod, S, which passes. down through aslot formed in the table A, and which has a notch, or catch formed in the side of its lower end, to receive the catch-bar T, to hold the'said board It down.
The catch-bar T is pivoted at its inner end to the 4table A, its free end moves back and forth in a keeper attached to said table, and it is held forward against the catch S bya spring, U, attached to said table,and the free end of which presses against the said catchbar T.
j The vboard R is raised, when the catch S is released from the bar T, by coiled springs V, placed in recesses in the table A, and the upper ends of which rest against the under side of the board R.
W are arms, exactly like the arms B, and provided with catches X, levers Y, and set-screws Z, similar to the catches G, levers H, and set-screws I, of the said arms B, for-*the purpose of holding and adjusting the inclination of the frame A, in which is secured the pattern, according to which the gilding is to be done.
The arms NV are connected to each other in pairs by rods B', and they are pivoted toa long rod, C', secured to supports D', attached to the table A.
The arms W slide freely upon the 4rod C', so that the pattern' can be conveniently adjusted in the desired position upon the plate to which the gold-leaf has been` applied, in the manner hereinbefore described, or in any other convenient manner. j
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure 'by Letters Patent- 1. The three pivoted holder-arms B, two stationary land one adjustable, provided with catchesG, pivoted levers H, and set-screws I, the connecting-rod E, and pivoting-rod O, in combination with each other, and with the rack L, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the long adjusting-screw J With the pivoted holder-arms B, substantially as herein l shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
3. The book-holder block K and spring-catches M, in combination with the grooved rack L and plateholder B G E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the arms'P and springs Q with rod C', with each other, substantially7 as herein shown J and described and for the purpose set forth.
