APPLICATION FILED MAY 31, 1907.

COMBINED SEAT AND TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 190s.
Application filed May 31, 1907. Serial No. 376,738.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANUEL R. RODRI- GUEs, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Seat and Table, of
which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y
This invention relates to articles of furniture consisting of a flat top resting on legs on which meals are served, and of a art or thing on which to sit while eating, an in particular to a combined article of furniture serving both functions, and in which, when not in use, the seat maybe folded up under the table, the invention being peculiarly adapted for use in places where a number of persons are assembledtogether for meals, as in mess halls, refectories, and the like, and it has for its object the provision of a device of the kind set forth, of simple construction, and forming in operation a durable and eiiicient organization.
To attain the desired end, the invention consists in novel devices and combinations of devices as hereinafter explained.
In order to enable the invention to be fully understood, I shall proceed to explain the same by reference to the drawings, which accompany and form a part of this specification, and in which a perspective view of an article constructed according to my invention is shown. l
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring particularly by reference symbols or characters to the drawings, A denotes one of a series of s aced standards formed with a preferably bifurcated lower portion a, and having ordinarily horizontal arms a constructed and arranged to support the common table C.
A swinging seat B preferably provided with a series of ordinarily extending arms b is hinged' at a2 to the standards or frames A, which latter are preferably provided with stop devices, as the pins b', in order to limit y the downward movement of the said seat.
The frames or standards A also preferably have spring catches D to sustain the seat B in a vertical position adjacent to the table C in such a manner that the seat may be disengaged from the said spring catches at will. The spring catches D are preferably constructed and arranged to become en aged with anddisenga ed from the rearward y extending arms t o the seat B at will. I also use on some occasions auxiliary s ring catches F located at the u per part o the frames or standards A in or er to engage the top of the table.
It will be observed that when the seat is folded up, it is practically in the plane of the edges of the standards and of the table, forming a compact article of furniture, and affording an aisle for the attendants to set the tables in places where there are a series of these combined seats and tables standing near each other.
The said combined seats and tables may be used in a two-fold capacity, namely, first, to afford both a table and seat therefor for persons when at meals, and second, in places where there are a number of rows or series of the combined seats and tables set up, in l `which case the persons sitting on one seat may eat from an adjacent table, the to of the said combined seat and table at w ich they are sitting serving to aord, in this instance, a support for the back of the persons so seated.
It will be observed that a folding table and seat is herein disclosed, by which, on account of the Y-shaped frames used therein, when folded, a large space is gained between the standards without presenting any projecting portions to interfere lwith the assage of ersons thereby, and when unfo ded, sufficient seat surface is afforded without occupying much floor space; and that each seat may not only be used, as stated, selectively or alternately either as a means of sitting at the same table or at an adjacent table, but a series of unfolded tables may be placed much closer together than would otherwise be possible, which fact renders the invention very desirable for use in ublic institutions.
I wish it to be un erstood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shownA and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person-skilled in the art.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a combined seat and table, a plurality of supporting standards consisting of inverted Y-sha ed frames, comprising a base horizontally isposed at the to and a vertical support having horizonta extensions,
, plane of the edge of the table top.
in combination with a flat top member Wider than the said extensions, and With a seat member having rearwardly extending arms hinged to the frames, and with means consisting of stops in the frames to limit the movement of the seat in one direction in order to lie in the plane of the top faces of the said bases, and also with means to limit the movement of the seat in another direction, consisting of the abutting edges of the said horizontal extensions, in order to lie in the 2. YIn a combined seat and tab e, a plural ity *of supporting standards consisting of inverted Y-shaped frames A, comprising a base a horizontally disposed at the top, and a central vertical sup ort having horizontal extensions af, in com ination With a common flat to member C mounted on and rigidly secure to the standards and Wider than the said extensions, and with a seat member B having rearwardly extending arms b hinged to the interior faces of the frames, and wlth means consisting of stops on the trames to limit the movement of the seat in one dirce gr tion in order to lie in the horizontal plane of the top faces of the said bases, and also with means to limit the movement of the saine in another direction, consisting of the abutting edges of the said horizontal extensions, in order to lie in the vertical plane o'l the edge of the table top and ol the front portions ol the said bases.
ln testimony of the foregoing speeileation I do hereby sign the same in the borough of Brooklyn in the city of N en York, county and State of New York this 13th day of May, 1907,
MANUEL R. RUBRIQUES. Vitnesses:
ROB: SCHWARZ, J. ODELL FOWLER.
