800131, residing at Hinge Junction, in the county of Jefferson, State of Ohio, citizens of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- I-Iolding Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a bag holding device, and the invention relates more particu larly-to a novel device for holding large bags or sacks in position to be filled.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device that can be easily manipulated to elevate material and position the same to be deposited into a bag or sack, the bag or sack being retained in an open position by the device, whereby the material can easily enter the same.

Another object of this invention is to pro vide a bag filling device that will save considerable time, permit of a predescribed quantity of material being placed in the bag, and save considerable labor in elevating material to be placed in a bag.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described, and then specifiointed out in the appended claims. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a bag filling device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line :r :c of Fig. 1, a part of the mechanism being broken away.

The device as herein shown, embodies a platform 1 upon which is erected two sets of standards 2 and 3, the standards 2 being of a greater height than the standards 3, the ob ject of which will presently appear.

The standards of each set are connected to the platform 1, as at 4:, and are connected to each other by bolts and nuts 5. The sets of standards are connected together by a tie rod 6, said tie rod being located at the upper end of the standards 3. The standards are sufficiently spaced apart to serve conventionally as guides for a hopper or fillingmouth 7, which is provided with op )ositely disposed fins 8, extending between the standards 2, 2

and 3, 3. The hopper or filling-mouth 7 is provided'with a bail 9, connected by a chain 10 to a lever 11, said lever being fulcrumed at 12, between the upper edges of the standards 2. These standards are provided with a hook 13 for engaging the handle end 14 of the lever 11 for retaining the hopper or fillingmouth 7 in an elevated position, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The hopper or filling-mouth 7 is provided with a drop bottom or grate 15 hinged to said hopper or filling-mouth, as at 16. The free edge of the drop bottom or gate 15 carries a pin 17 adapted to be engaged by a pivoted lever 18, carried by the hopper or fillingmouth, said lever being guided by a keeper 19 suitably secured to the side of the hopper or receptacle.

In order to maintain a sack or bag in position to be filled, the hopper or filling-mouth 7 is provided near its lower end with hooks 20 and upon these hooks are secured the upper edges or mouth of a bag or sack 21.

The hopper or filling-mouth 7 in a lowered position can easily be filled with a quantity of material to be placed in a bag or receptacle and then the bag or sack secured to the hopper or filling-mouth. After the hopper or filling-mouth 7 has been elevated and located in position as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the lever 18 can be manipulated to release the drop bottom or gate and allow the contents of the hopper or receptacle to pass into thebag or sack 21. The bag or sack 21 is then removed, the drop bottom or gate 15 closed and the device can then be used for filling another bag or sack.

Having nowdescribed our invention what we claim as new, is

1. A device of the type described comprising a platform, sets of standards carried thereby, a hopper slidably mounted between said standards, a lever fulcrumed upon one set of standards and connected to said hopper, a drop bottom or gate hinged to said hopper, bag holding hooks carried by said hopper adjacent the lower end thereof, a pivoted lever carried by said hopper for retaining said hopper bottom or gate in a closedposition, and means carried by -one set of standards for retaining said hopper in an elevated position.
