To all whom #may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED T. KRUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-MetalPacking-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in sheet-metal packing-cases designed with particular reference to the transportation and storage of liquids contained in bottles and similar vessels.
.The invention relates more particularly to the construction of the upper and lower edges of the case and means for securing and supporting the lid or cover and bottom in proper position whereby these portions of the case are greatly strengthened and rendered less liable to injury as well as improving the general construction of the case.
The invention also relates to improvements in bottoms of either the open or closed type or class, and means vfor securing the same to the case.
The paramount objc-ct of 'the'invention' is to provide a generally improved packing-case having either a closed or open bottom and adapted to be used 'eitherjwith' or without a lid or cover. e
' With these ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement -and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a transverse sectional perspective view of' an improved -case embodying'my invention. Fig. 2, a detail erspective'view showing a modified form of id-supporting-flange or bar. Fig. 3, a sectional pers ective view of one of the walls of the case siiowing manner of secu'ring an open bottom comprising a series of bottle-supporting-bars. Fig. 4, a detail isometric view of an intermediate portion of one of the bottle-supporting bars shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5, a similar view ofthe tongued end of the saine before being bent over and secured about the beading at the lower edges i of the case as shown in Fig. 4. Similar characters of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The walls 1, of the case are bent or crimped,
near their upper and llower edges, to form outwardly-extending su porting- flanges 2, and 3, respectively, and t e edges thereof are bent over forming upper and lower headings 4, and 5, preferably inclosing a wire 6. The headings 4, and 5, abut against the su porting- flanges 2, and 3, and the outer e ges of the same are, preferably, flush with the outer edges of the supporting-flanges as shown.
The lower supporting-flange 3, forms a bottom-supporting flange and the lower beading 5, forms a friction-bearing strengtheningbeading about the vlower edges of thev case, and the groove or recess provided by the upper supporting-flange 2, is adapted to form a seat for and contain one side of a strengthening lid-supporting-strip or bar 7, which `may be either fiat as shown in Fig. 2, or T- sha ed, in cross section, as shown in Fig. 1, ant, preferably, having its de ending portion 7 a, secured to the walls o the case by means of rivets 8.
The lid' 0r cover 9, has its marginal edges bent over forming a beading l0, inclosing a wire 11, and the edges of the lid or cover are bars 14, forming an open bottom as shown in Figs. 8, and 6, and hereinafter described. The edges of the closed bottom 13, are bent over and about the lower beading 5, forming a second or double friction-bearing strength- Y suing-beading 5a, about the lower edges of the case. n l
The bottle-supporting-bars 14," comprised in an open bottom case may be of any suitable and convenient form but are, preferably, U-shaped in cross section, and are referably bent or formed out of sheet meta in either the form shown iii lFigs. 6, and 7, with the deprelndng portion lthereof flush with the 'ction-bearing strengthening-beading 5, of the case, or of the form shownin Figs. 3, 4, and 5, in which the bars are formed by a strip of metal bent or crimped upon itself longitudinally to form the de ending portion 14, and provided 'wit elongated tongues 15, bent upon themselves to form an end flange 16, taking into the roove or recess provided by the outwar y-extending bottom-supportin -ilange 3, and are then bent over and aout the friction-bearing beading 5, vabout the lower edges of the case whereby the bars 14, are securely fastened thereto.
In Figs. 6, and 7, the ends of the horizontal portion of this form of bar simply take into t e groove of the bottom-supporting-flange 3, and the ends are 'secured to the walls of the case by means of a tongue 17 taking through a slot or opening in the flange and bent over the outer edge of the same.
Theends of the depending portions 14, of the bars 14, may either abut against the beading 5, as shown in Fig. 3, or be cut away to provide a notch or recess intermediate the ends thereof and the beading 5, as shown in Fig. 6.
The Walls of the case may be formed of a single blank of sheet metal bent at the corners of the case and having the meeting ends of the sheet suitably united, forming continuous encircling outwardly-extending supporting-flanges with a lid-supporting bar mounted in the upper supporting-flange, or
made u of separate sheets of inetal'and lid-' supporting-bars suitably united at the corners of the case. v
The term bottom,."as used in the specification and ap ended claims, is used in a eneral sense an includes both a closed ottoni, as shown in Fig. 1, or an open bottom, as shown in Figs. 4, and 7, fi. e. what may be termed an integral bottom, and one made up. of separate bars, preferably, of the form shown and described.`
From the foregoing description, taken in yconnection with .the accompanying drawings, the construction and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
' Having thus described my invention, without having attempted to set forth all the forms in which it may be made, or all the modes of its use, I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is,-.
1.A packing-case, consisting of suitable walls crimped to form upper and lower outwardly-extending supporting-flanges forming interior recesses and headings abutting against said suppoi'ting=tlanges, a strengthening-bar mounted in the recess formed by the upper supporting-flange, `and a bottom hving its marginal edges taking into the re- 'cess formed by said lower sup )citing-flange and bent about the lower bea ing forming a second or double beading about. the'lower edges of the case.
2. .ln a packing-case, the combination with suitable walls crimped near the upper edges thereof to form an `outwardly-eXtending supporting-flange providing a recess, and a beading formed above and resting on said supporting-flange; of a strcngthenling'- bar` mounted in said recess and projecting inwardly to forni a lid-supporting-llange.
3. A packing-case, comprising suitable walls crimped near the upper and lower edges forming outwardly -extending supportingflanges forming recesses and having the edges thereof bent over forming a beading resting against said su p pOrting-llangGs, a strengthening-bar mounted in the recess formed by the upper support-nig flange and extending inwardly to form a lid-supporting-lange, a bottom taking into the recess formed b the lower supporting-flange, and a beaded id or. cover mounted on said lid-supportiiig-llange and resting within and flush with the upper beading of the case. ,A
4. In a packing-case, the combination with suitable Walls crimped to form an outwardlyextending supporting flange providing a recess, and a beading formed above said supporting-flange; of a strengthening-bar mounted in said recess and 4projecting inwardly to form a lid-supporting-ilange, and a beaded lid or cover mounted on said lid-supporting-flange and resting within and flush with said beading formed about the upper edges of the case.

In a packing-case, the combination with suitable walls bent near the `lower edges thereof to form a sup porting-fl ange providing an inner recess, and a beading formed below andim pingiiig against said supporting-llange; of a bot-tom taking into and scciiredwithin said inner* recess and impinging against said beading.
7. In a packing-ease, the combination with suitable walls bent near the lower edges thereof to form a supporting-flange providing an inner recess, and a beading orrncd lli) `extending supporting suitable walls provided with an outwardly- -ange roviding an interior recess, and a formed below said supporting-flange of a, series of bottle supporting bars provided with elongated tongues bent upon themselves forming end flanges taking into said interior recess and bent over and about said frictionbearing beading.
