Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. OWENS, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawm I Iy invention relates to an improved wall re ister, and I declare that the following is a fu 1, clear, concise and exact description thereof sufficient to enable one skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like letters and numerals refer to like parts throughout.

The invention relates particularly to a wall register and comprises several new features in the construction, arrangement and operation of the shutter of the register and other parts, including an improvement in the register itself whereby to secure the benefit of additional heating surface and circulation of the air.

One of the principal features is the con struction and use of a shield to protect the wall surfaces above the register from becoming smoked and soiled by hot air arising from the register and the furnace pipe thereto.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of a register with my improvements; Fig. 2 is a cross section view on the center vertical line, showing the shutter closed, while Fig. 3 is a like view with the shutter open. Figs. 4 and 5 show diflerent forms of hood, which are mounted and used in connection with the shutter. Fig. 6 is a front view showing the register frame and the furnace pipe, above and below.

Referring to the figures in detail, A is the wall surface and B the furnace pipe projec tion therefrom, which may be given suitable dimensions below, at and above the register parts. The register parts comprise a face or grille A, and a case O, having top, bottom and sides and which is properly mounted on the wall. It has an interior rim 0 to which the furnace pipe outlet 1) is attached. A space is thus provided around the furnace pipe B and between it and the outer members of the case 0. Below the register opening the front Wall of the case O is perforated, as seen at c and like perforations are provided in the front wall above the register, as seen at c The air passes in the former Specification of Letters Patent.

holes, around thefurnace pipe and is discharged, after being heated by" the pipe, through openings o This utilizes a considerable heating surface of the pipe on its outside, the pipe being heated by the furnace air. It also provides a degree of circulation in the air, taking in the colder air at the bottom and discharging it, heated, in to the current of furnace air, or into the upper air if the shutter be closed. This secondary current, as it may be called, also diverts the furnace air from the walls above the register, more thoroughly distributing it into the room and assisting to protect the wall from soiling.

On the inner rim, 0, of the case is swung the shutter D, by lugs (I supported in slot openings d in the rim, so that it can be slightly lifted. The shutter when'swung to open the register is thrown into the furnace pipe a greater or less degree to project into the room the desired proportion of the hot air passing up the furnace pipe. On the face of the shutter are mounted brackets E, the outer, ends of which are pierced to receive trunnions Fwhich pivotally support the hood F on the brackets. The hood F consists of a curved plate which. extends back through slot or slots f in the case C, over the outlet of the furnace pipe. It is provided with one or more notched strips 9 to engage the edge of the opening in case C and hold the hood at different points back or forward. The swing of the hood and of the shutter are coincident, so that when the shutter is open to throw heated air into the room the hood is projected to deflect the air into the room and protect the walls above the register. The hood also serves as a foot rest, especially convenient when swung outward. A lip f is provided on the front edge of the hood for handling. By this means the hood and shutter are slightly lifted to clear the notched strip g and then swung to the desired position where they are held by a notch engaging the edge of the slot opening.

Various mechanical modifications are possible within the scope of the invention, but which need not be shown. In Figs. 4 and 5 however I show modifications. The former consists in extending the hood beyond the trunnions of thehood. This extension is indicated by fa in Fig. 4. Fig. 5 shows a smaller hood which, does not extend backward so far and has two notched strips.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a wall register, the combination of a frame, a grille fixed therein, a shutter and a hood loosely mounted in the frame, the shutter bein hung within the grille and the hood above t e register, the register projecting from the wall providing thereby a recess for the hood and the hood being provided with a notched portion engaging by gravity an edge of the register frame, said notches being so formed as to hold the shutter and the hood in a given position and releasable by lifting the hood.

2. In a wall register, the combination of a frame, a grille fixed therein, a shutter pivotally hung within the grille, a bracket mounted on the shutter and passing through the grille, a hood loosely supported on the bracket and swingable with the shutter and means mounted on the hoodengaging the frame to hold the hood and shutter in given adjustable position the said hood in its outer position extending from a point within the register frame outwardly and downwardly in front of the upper part of the grille.

3. n combination with a furnace pipe a wall register having a frame whose face portion extends outwardly from the wall surface, the walls of the furnace pipe being brought forwardly to connect with the register outlet, the frame having a top and side walls retreating to surround the furnace pipe outlet and contact with the wall of the room, the top of said frame being above the top of the pipe outlet and providing thereby aspace, a hood and a shutter mounted together the former to swing in and out of said space and the latter to swing in and out from the register face to the back wall of the furnace pipe.

4. In combination with a furnace pipe a wall register having a frame whose face portion extends outwardly from the wall surface, the walls of the furnace pipe being brought forwardly to connect with the register outlet, the frame having a top and side walls retreating to surround the furnace pipe outlet and contact with the wall of the room, the top of said frame being above the top of the pipe outlet and providing thereby a space, a hood and a shutter mounted together the former to swing in and out of said space and the latter to swing in and out from the register face to the back wall of the furnace pipe, the shutter and hood being mounted to permit slight lifting of the same, the hoodhaving notches engaging by the weight of the hood and the shutter an adjacent edge of the frame.

5. In combination with a .furnace pipe a wall register having a frame whose face portion extends outwardly from the wall surface, the walls of the furnace pipe being brought forwardly to connect with the register outlet, the frame having a top and side walls retreating to surround the furnace-pipe outlet and connecting with the wall of the room, the top of the said frame being above the top of the pipe outlet and providing thereby a space, a hood and a shutter-mounted together, the former to swing in and out of the said space, andv the latter to swing in and out from the register face to the back wall of the furnace pipe, the frame being pierced for air inlets and outlets below and above the pipe outlet, respectively.

6. In combination with a furnace pipe a wall register having a frame with a projecting face portion surrounding the outlet of the furnace pipe, the said outlet being projected from the wall of the room within the frame, and the frame retreating to be supported on the wall and being of a size to provide a space between it and the register outlet, the top of said frame being above the ipe outlet, and the bottom thereof being be ow the bottom of the outlet, the frame having apertures opening into said space at the top and bottom, and a hood and a shutter mounted together, the former to swing in and out of the said upper space and the latter to swing in and out from the register face to the back wall of the furnace pipe, a space being provided by the said construction for the circulation of air entering through the inlets at the bottom of the frame and passing through the apertures at the top.
