CARRIER Specification of Letters Patent.
SYSTEM.
Patented April i4, i908.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that'l, SAM H. L1Ber, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eest'Orange,
invented certain new and useful im rove- 4ments in Carrier Systems, of 'which tliie following -is a. s eciiication. V My invention relates to the control o trains of carriers, and is particularly edapted for use'in places where there is a source of Heretofore it has been customery to eniploy mechenicelly-connected trains of csrend travelin on n supcables, or other mechanical connections to a. small stesi-n engine which is placed with its boiler near the carrier system. Such systems digging sewers, etc. Ihe ob`ect of my 'invention is to eliminate necessity of' einployinga, steam plant at the point wihere the carriers are working, and also to dispense with the services of e tireman and signal man.
My invention broedly considered consists in the combination with n train oi' (-,arriers ing rail,I of en operators carrier, electric driving motors onthe several carriers, ay source of'current 4for the motors, and ineens on the operators carrier for controlling the motors on ll the carriers.
h y invention further comprises-aJ carrier systemin which each carrier is rovided not only with e driving motor propelling it along hoisting and lowering the bue et 4carried thereby, and with a control system adapted' for control of both driving and hoisting motors.
My invention will best be understood by referencel to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l shows a side elevation of a portion of' n train of carriers arranged in accordance with my iuv'ention; Fig. 2 shows en end elevation ol the seme Fig. 3 shows e diagram of connections of the control system; Fig. 4
system; and Fig. 5 shows another modification.
In Fig. l, R represents thesupporting rail from which the carriers are suspended, and
l vided with e driving motor M, which is con nected through suitable s eed-reducing gears to the driving wheels Vl, which rest on the rail R. The several carriers are mechanically connected by cou ilings O, end are also electrically connected y conductors c. All of the carriers butone are also provided with hoisting motors it wljiich' nre connected through suitable speed-reducing gears, (not shown) Ato the'hoisting drums D, from which are suspended the buckets B. On one of the carriers or buckets the hoisting motor is omitted, and instead a support isuiteble for an operator, is suspended from the cerrier. Upon this su port is A'mounted s switcher switches S, liy ineens of which the driving and hoisting inotors'on the several carriers may b'econtrolled. The carriers are provided with vsuiteble current-collectms, such as trolleys t t2, engaging the supply conductors '1" T, suspended ucar the sup` porting rail, as shown in Fig. 2. Y
Now, referring to Fig. 3, one suitable afrrangemont ol` the controi circuits is iis -follows: The several motors on thc corriers are provided with 1nngiictirnlly--nctuzitcd rcvcrsing switches, tho n-mgnsifvftic windings being connected to the control wires o', c2, c, and c, which extend through the trein. 'l`wo master switches and Shore mounted on the oporetors carrier, sind control the' driving and hoisting motors, respectively, 'oy
'controlling the connections 'from the control IWires to the supply conductors.
switch S is moved toward the right a circuit. will beclosed as follows: :trom vwire 2 through the trolley t2 on the operators crrier, through switch S', to trein-wire c3, through-the right-hand magnets rn. on the several carriers, and through thetrolley t on the several carriers to conductor T One of the' magnetically-actuated switches on erich of the carriers will thus be closed on each carrier and circuit will. -bc closed from trolley-t2 on each carrier ti'irougl'i Athe contacts of right-hand switch m, through'the armature of motor M', and through the fieldof motor M to trolle t. The hoisting Inotor is thus energized cor hoisting or lowering, es the cese may be. When the switch S on the operetors carrier is returned to ofi' position, the magnetically-actuated switches m are o cned andA the hoisting motors are broug it to rest.' 'if the switcli S is moved to its other position. the train-wire c2 will be sol Thus, if the i connected to the conductor T 2 and the lefthand switches m on all the carriers will be operated, thereby connecting the hoisting motors for operating in the opposite direction. The control of the driving motors by the switch S on the operators carrier and by the magnetically-'actuated switches 'm on the other carriers is precisely the same as has been already explained for the hoisting motors. actuated controlling devices is provided on the operators carrier, as well as on the other vcarriers of the train.
-trolley t2 on the operators carrier through the switch S,"to linewvire c, through the motor armaturgs M', to the train-wire c2, through switch S, to train-wire c, through the fields of motors l\/ to the trolleys t1. If the switch S is moved to its other operative position, the motors M' will be connected for rotation in the opposite direction. In Fig. 4 the arrangement of control for the driving motors is the same as that shown in Fig. 3,
.but obviously.. the controlling devicesv for these motors may also be omitted and these motors may be controlled in the same manner as has just been described in'. connection With the hoisting motors.
It will be seen that the hoisting motors in Fig. t are connected directly to a train-wire and are connected to the conductor 'I2 only through the trolley t2 on the operators car- Consequently, if the driving motors are arranged similarly to the hoisting motors, as shown in Fig. 4, the trolley tv2 could be omitted'on all the carriers except the operators carrier.' VSuch an arrangement is shown in Fili;r 5, in which only the operators carrier is provided with the second trolley t2. In Fig. 5 only the driving motors are shown,
the hoisting motors being omitted for the sake olsimplicity. In this arrangement of Fig. 5, the reversing of the ,motors is accom- Irglished by magnetically-actuated devices, as efore, but the motors, instead of being connected directly `to the `working conductors through their own trolleys are connected to A driving motor with its magneticallythe train-Wire c3, w lich is connected to they Working conductor T2 through the switch S on the operators carrier. This switch 1n this figure is arranged to vary the resistance adaptedV to travel t 'the train and connected to the actuating centosI direction of rotation byselectively operating the magnetically-actuated reversing switches. Obviously', many other modifications of the control system may be employed, and consequently' l do not desire to limit myself to the )articular construction and arrangement ot ,parts here shown, b ut aim in the appended claims to cover all modifications which are within the scope of my invention. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi' the United, States, isf- 1. In a carrier system, a supporting rail, a train of carriers suspended from said rail and iereon, load carrying devices suspended from said carriers, independent motors on the several carriers for driving them along said railand for hoisting said devices, a source of current for said motors, an operators carrier, and means ou the operators carrier controlling all of said motors..
