Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK E. ANDREWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in churns the obj ectof which is to make a cheap, simple and durable device for quickly churning or producing butter from cream. These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which.

A, represents an ordinary glass jar or bottle provided with a screw top which may be made any desired size and rests in the rack B, one or any desired number of these jars may be used in the rack B and the said rack may be provided with a set screw B for holding the jars in position, the inner end of said set screw being adapted to enter the usual concave bottom of jars of this character. Said jars are also provided with a suitable vent A provided with a cork A for letting the gas escape after the churning has been commenced a short time. This prevents the breaking of the vessel by the accumulated gas in the bottle. The object of these vents also enables the operator to open the jar without removing the jar from its position as this vent has to be opened usually two or more times in the early part of the churning to permit the escape of gas.

The rack B is made any desired size to receive the bottles and is supported in any suit able way to form a swing preferably by means of arms B which may have bearings on a rod C. Said rod is supported by a suitable frame D. Said frame D has suitable foot pieces D and a connecting support D with uprights D having holes D for receiving the rod C on which the rack B is supported or swings.

E is a rod connecting with the uprights D and is provided with chains or straps F on both sides. Said chains or straps F are provided with springs G and the upper ends are attached to the outer edge of the rack B at the two sides. These straps or chains are made to give a small amount of play or motion to the rack B and by means of the spring G a certain amount of elasticity is given to the chains or straps F. These chains or straps F are for the purpose of giving a quick or sudden jerk by stopping the swing of the rack B which contains the bottles A for throwing the contents of the bottles suddenly from one end to the other. The bottles for the purpose of churning being only partly full, preferably about one half full with cream to be churned, and. by means of the two straps or chains F a sudden jerk to throw the contents of the vessel is thus made as the rack B swings in either direction. This sudden jerk throws air into the cream and hastens the churning more than the gravity churn now in use.

By means of this device any desired quantity of cream can be churned at a time, a very small amount, or by increasing the number and size of the bottles any amount can be churned at a time.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame, comprising base members and upright end members, of a bar connecting said end members at the upper ends thereof, a swinging frame supported from said bar, a plurality of re ceptacles, means for clamping said receptacles upon said swinging frame, a second bar extending between the end members of the frame below said swing frame, straps extending between each side of said swing frame and said bar, and springs interposed between the ends of said straps.
