TOOL-GUIDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application led May 25, 1907. Serial No. 375,636.
of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to tool guides.
The object of my invention is to provide an easily removable guide for the shank of a pneumatically or similarly operated tool.
A further object is'to provide means for supporting the lower end of a barrel of a tool.
My invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
Ordinarily, these tools are fitted into the mouth of the barrel of the pneumatic actuating member, and when the lower end of the barrel becomes worn, the eliiciency of the tool becomes impaired. It is to provide a guide for the tool to prevent Wear on the lower end of the barrel, and to thus avoid this difficulty, that my invention is designed. It is also designed to provide means for the insertion of tools of diferent sizes by using p lates having openings therein of different sizes.
In the accom anying drawings, formin part of this app ication, I have illustrate one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my invention to the lower end of the barrel of a pneumatic actuating device; Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section taken approximately on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the directionindicated by the arrow; Fig.
`3 is an end elevation showing the application of my invention to the lower portion of the barrel of a pneumatic actuating member, Fig. 4 is alongitudinal vertical section taken approximately on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; and, Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section taken ap roXimately on line 5-.5 of Fig. 2.
eferring to the drawings, 1 designates a lower su ortin late, rovided with ide slots 2 iliufts edges. WlTere the tool isgffsed with means for adjusting the same vertically, these slots are adapted to receive suitable guides.
The lower end of the barrel 3 of the neumatic actuating mechanism is provide with a shoulder 4 and a reduced portion 5, ada ted to contact respectivelywith the shoulder 6 on the plate 1 and to pass through the opening 7 in said plate. li'or the purpose of securing the pneumatic tool, bolts 8 are disposed through the plate 1, and are adapted to be connected to a suitable support, such as a sinilar plate 1 at the upper end of the barrel 3. On its under face the plate 1 is rovided with parallel longitudinal depen ing flanges 9, having on their lower edges the inwardly extending lugs A10.
Disposed on the lugs 10 is a guide plate 11, provided with an opening 12 of less dimension than the opening 7 in the plate 1, so that it is impossible for the shank A of the tool to bear against the mouth or lower end of the barrel 3, in the ordinary operation of the tool. The opening 12 is preferably square because the shank A is generally square, and it is desired to prevent rotation thereof. When a round shank A is used, the squared opening in no way prevents the rotation thereof, but presents four wearing points only, which is an advantage in the practical operation of the tool.
The flanges 9 are connected intermediate of their ends by the integral webs 13, which are also integral with the plate 1 and project downward to a point above the lugs 10, so as to leave a space between the upper surface of the lugs 10 and the lower surface of the webs, equal to the thickness of the plate 11.
After the plate 11 is placed in position on the lugs 10, the bolts 14 are disposed transversely through the flanges 9 and nuts 15 placed thereon. This construction ermits the ready removal of the plate 1 1 for t ie purposes of repair and removal.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tool guide comprising a su orting plate having an o ening therein anlliaving guide slots in its e ge, means for securing the plate, and a tool guiding plate provided with an opening therein of less dimension than the opening in the supporting plate and disposed in alinement therewith-and means for seouring said tool guiding plate.
2. A tool guide comprising a supporting plate having an opening therein and a projecting shoulder, means for securing the plate and a removable tool guiding plate carried by the supporting plate.
3. A tool guide comprising a plate having an opening and provided with depending flanges, a tool guiding plate dis osed between-the flanges and provided wit an opening, and means for removably securing the tool guiding plate.
4. A tool guide eomprising a supporting plate having an opening and provided with depending flanges having inwardly extending lugs7 a tool guiding plate disposed between the fianges on the lugs and provided with an opening, and means for removably securing the tool guiding plate between the flanges.
5. A tool guide comprising a supporting plate having an opening therein and provided with depending flanges eonnected by integral webs and provided with inwardly eX- tended lugs, a tool guiding plate disposed be tween the flanges on the lugs and beneath the webs and provided with an opening, and
means for removably securing the guiding" lugs, a removable plate provided. with an .f
opening disposed on the lugs, bolts disposed transversely through the flanges at each end of the removable plate, and nuts on the bolts.
8. A tool guide Comprising a supporting plate with a central opening therein7 and a tool guiding plate secured under the supporting plate and provided with an opening in alinement with and of less dimension than the opening in the supporting plate.
In witness whereof l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
HUGH YOUNG EVERETT.
