cation.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter de;: scribed and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompany: ing drawings, and the reference characters rnarked thereon, which form a part of this refer tospecification. Similar characters similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of the improved holder, showing the hinged clamping section swung down fromthe stationary section in which position the clamp is 0 en.- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hole er with the clamp open as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 1s a view similar to that shown in Fig. '2, except that the clamp is shown closed.
Fig. 4 is a'view in side elevation of a bedstead, supporting a spring-mattress, a sectional hair mattress and a sheet, the sheet and mattress-sections being held in fixed relation to each other and to the bedstead by our improved holder.
The object of the invention is to prevent the lower section of a sectional mattress from slipping toward the foot of the bed away from the other section, and at the same time prevent the sheet and other bed-clothes from being pulled up away from the foot of the bed.
The holding device is preferably made of wire, as shown in the drawings, although we do not Wish to be limited to any particular kind of material or form.
The numeral, 1, represents the body part the lower end of the lower section of a sectional mattress, and also serves as a clampsection, cooperating with the supplementing cla1np-section, 3, hinged at, 4, u on the body, 1, the hinges, 4, being compose oi interlock ing eyes formed in the body part and in the hinged sections, 3, as shown in the drawings. The upper or outer portion of the hinged clamping section is bent over in the form of a hook, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings at 5. v v
The hinged clamping-sectionis shown in Figs. 1 and 2 swung outwardly to an inclined position adapted to permit the end of a sheet or blanket to be inserted between the. swinging end of the ,clamping-section and the hooked end of the upright body member.
To clamp the inserted object between the two clamping-sections, the clamping-secti on, 3, is swung up to the other clampingsection and pressed downwardly until it passes the lower end of the hook-part, 5, so as to clamp the interposed object between the ends of the two sections, as seen in Fig. 5.
In order to swing the section, 3, past the hook, 5, the outer' ortionoi the section, 3, is
ushed downward y below the lower end of 00k, 5, the coil-springs, 6, permitting of such depression.' i
When the clamp is in use any strain upon the inserted fabr c, 8, which. represents a sheet or blanket used in a bed tends to draw the cla1npingscotions together so as to increase the clamping effect. The sheet is held between the elongated portions of the clamping sections marked respectively, 9 and H), in Fig. 1.
Tlremedy-portion of the holder is provided with the arms, .1 and 12, terminating in eyes, 13, adapted to receive one end of a cord or chain, 14, the other end of thecord being provided .with a hook 15. The cord may be bifurcated at .one end, one of the bifur cations being fastened in one eye, and ti e other bifurcation in the other eye, as shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 4 we have shown our improved holder applied to a bed. The bedstead, 20, which may be of any known form is shown supporting a mattress, 21, which may be an ordinary spring1nattr css, or any other form of mattress, being supported in any kin wn manner. Hair mattresses adapted t be placed upon a spring-mattress are usually made in two sections for convenience in in nipulation and to permit of OBGSQCtiCZil b the b mg manipulated independently of the other section. 22. represents one section of a sectional mattress, and, 23, represents theother section, both sections being superposed upon the spring-mattress.
' Before the mattress-sections are placed upon the spring-mattress our improved device isgjlaeed in pos1t1on,'as shown in Fig 4,
y-part resting upon the lower end of the mattress, and being connected by the cord, 14, and hook, 15, with .the opposite end of the spring-mattress, as shown, which prevents the holding device from slipping downward toward the footof the bed. The mattress sections are then placed upon the spring-mattress, the section, 23, at the foot of the bed resting upon the arms, 11 and 12, and abutting against the vertical portions of the upright member 2. The weight of the mattress-section bearing upon the arms, 11,
and 12, serves to maintain the upright member in a vertical position, and the holder bearing against the lower end wallof the lower sectlon, 23, prevents it from slipiping toward the foot of the bed and away rom the other section, 22, it being apparent from Fig. 4 that Without the improved holding device, the'section, 23, would be free to slip toward the foot of the bed and leave an opening between the two sections equal to the space between the solid line which divides the two sections and the dotted line 25.
The uprightme1nber, 2, also forms a clamping section which cooperates with the hinged clamping section, 3, to hold the lower end of the sheet, 30, in place and revent its slipping upward toward the heacFof the bed.
When desired, the lower ends of the blanket or blankets can also be included with the sheet between the clamping sections, but ordinarily it is only necessary to secure the sheet as the bed coverings above the upper sheet will not be pulled up from the foot of the bed unless the sheet is free to move with them.
We are thus able to provide'a holding del I Vice for beds which will not only prevent the sections of a sectional mattress from separating but will also prevent the bed coverposition of the mattress-resisting abutmen to mattresses of different sizes, or so as to retain the mattress. atany given desired distance from the foot-of the bed.
By the use of a spring-actuated clamping mechanism, the device is easily and quickly operated to secure the bed-clothes in the desired position.
What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A mattress-and-bed-clothes holder comprising a horizontal member adapted to bear against the underside of a mattress-section; an upright member integral with the horizontal member adapted to bear against the lower end of such mattress-section; a springactuated clamping section cooperative with the upright member in forming a clamp; and means for holding the horizontal member r0511 slipping toward the lower end of the 2. A mattress-andbedclothes holder comprising a single piece of wire bent to form a horizontal member and an upright member with pivot-eyes at the junction of such mem-,
bers; a second piece of wire bent to form pivot-ends inserted in the pivot-eyes; a pair of coil-springs an a clamping bar cooperative with the upri ht member to form a clamp; and means or securing such device from-slipping toward the lower end of the bed.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this 1 8 day of October, 1906.
