Be it known that I, YOUNG Kin BUELL, a subject of the Emperor of China, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Receptacle for Powdered Substances, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relatos to receptacles for powdered substances, my more particular object being to produce such a receptacle especially adapted for holding pep er or salt,

A gage plate 10 has the form of a disk and is provided with slots 11 of arcuate form,'each tapering off narrow at 12. The slots of the gage plate cross the slots of the cap, as indicated in Fig. 2. The gage plate 10 is provided with a central aperture 13. A button 14 is provided with a stem 15 and with a neck 16. The stem 15 x extends through the cap 6 and the neck 16 through the gage plate 10. The operation of my device is as follows: The sait 18 being placed within the body portion 4, the cap 6 is screwed into position, as indicated in Fig. 1. grasps the button 14 and'turns it, thereby; turning the gage 10. As will be understood from Fig. 2, the slots of the gage cross the slots of the cap 6ja'n by turning the gage plate by'aid of the button 14, the aggregate area, representing the open spaces formed by the crossing of the slots, may be increased or decreased at will. The amount of lalt thus discharged may be regulated at w1 f v Ido not limit myself to the useof the invention upon saltcellars and pepper bottles, for obviously the same principle can be employed for any, other powdered substance without departing from the spirit of my invention. v Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A receptacle for powdered substances, comprising a body portion, a cap mounted thereupon and provided with slots of sub stantially arcuate fo'L i., a gage plate rotatably mounted on the cap and likewise provided with slots of substantially arcuate form, the slots of said gage plate crossing the slots of said cap, and means for turning said gage plate.
