Be it known that 1, ANDREW NAGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmhurst, in the county of-Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoof- Spreading Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hoof-spreading horseshoes, and the object is to provide a simple construction of shoe of this character which will automatically spread the heel of the horses hoof, and in which the degree of expansion of the shoe as a whole or of either side thereof may be regulated.

With the above object in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and clearly illustrated 'by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a shoe constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, an edge view of the same, and Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of a portion of a shoe constructed to expand only one side of the heel of the hoof.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the sections of which the shoe is composed, the section 1 being the front or toe portion, and the sections 2, the heel portions. Sections 2 are hinged to the main portion 1 of the shoe as indicated at 3. The front portion or section 1 is provided with the two calks 4, having perforations formed therein through which the expanding spring 5 passes, the central portion of said spring being thus guided and supported by said toe calks.

Each heel-section 2 carries a calk 6 having a perforation extending therethrough, said perforations receiving the ends of the expanding spring 5. Set-screws 7 carried by said heel-calks 6 engage and hold the spring The expansion of the heel portions of the shoe may be increased, by first loosening said set-screws, then pressing the heel sections inwardly toward eachother, and while held in that position, tightening the set-screws, or by loosening the set-screws, the expansion of both heel-sections may be reduced.

As shown in Fig. 3, a single spring 8 may be used where it is desired to expand only one side of the heel of the hoof, the spring being made reversible so that it may be used for either side of the shoe.

The front part of the shoe is first nailed to the hoof and then the heel portions secured with light nails, following the normal shape of the hoof. By adjusting the heel portions as before described and securing in this adjustment by means of the set-screws, the desired expansion of the hoof may be obtained.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A horseshoe of the character described, comprising a main or front portion, heel portions pivoted to said front portion, a spring for expanding said heel portions of substantially the same outline as that of the shoe and supported by the front portion of the shoe, and an adjustable connection between the legs of the spring and the heel portions.

2. A horseshoe of the character described comprising a main or front portion, heel portions pivoted to said front portion, a spring for expanding said heel-portions of substantially the same outline as that of the shoe and supported by the front portion of the shoe, supports for the legs of the spring car ried by the heel portions through which the spring loosely passes, and set-screws carried by the supports for securing said heelportions and the legs of the spring together.

3. A horseshoe of the character described comprising a main or front portion, heel portions pivoted to said front portion, a spring for expanding the heel portions of substantially the same outline as that of the shoe, spaced toe-calks carried by said front portion and perforated to receive the spring, heelcalks carried by the heel-portions of the shoe perforated to receive the legs of the spring, and set-screws carried by the heel-calks engaging said spring and securing the heel-portions thereto.
