Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 10, 1906. Serial No. 295,428.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM Donrmnson and EL- MER E. DONALDSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Moingona, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Miners Pick, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a miners pick or similar tool having a body portion to be permanently secured to the handle and having pick points that may be readily, quickly and easily attached to the body and firmly held therein under the various conditions of actual use and which may be detached from the body quickly and easily.
Our invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the body portion of the pick, the pick points and the point releasing device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in our claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a vertical, central, sectional view through the pick body with the pick points in position therein. Fig. 2 shows a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a top view of the body portion of the pick with portions of the pick points therein. Fig. 4 shows a side view of same, and Fig. 5 shows a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, we have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate the pick handle. This handle is permanently fitted into the socket 11 of the pick body portion. The pick body portion is provided with tapered openings extending from its ends toward its central portion. At the inner end of each tapered opening is a smaller opening having a flat top and bottom and extended transversely through the head is a slot 12 which communicates with the openings, before described.
The pick points are indicated by the numeral 13 and have their inner ends tapered at 14 to it the tapered openings. Beyond the tapered portions 1 1 are the flat extensions 15 to fit into the openings having flat top and bottom portions at the inner ends of the tapered openings. The inner edges of the pick points are rounded at 16 and these rounded edges in use are designed to project into the slot 12. We have provided set screws 17 extended through the under portions of the pick body and designed to engage the tapered portions of the pick points. These set screws are not essential in holding the pick points in position in most instances, but are provided for additional security against the withdrawal of the pick points.
The numeral 18 indicate a flat wedge-shaped key designed to pass through the slot 12 and of such width that its edges will engage the rounded ends 16 of the pick points. When said keys pass through the slot 16, both the pick points will be pushed outwardly a slight distance sufficiently to loosen them from the tapered openings, so that they may readily be removed. In the large end of the key 18 is a square opening 19 designed for use in firmly setting the pick points in their tapered sockets. In use with feature 01' the device, the pick points are first placed in the tapered opening and then the key 18 is placed in position with its opening over the squared end oi the pick point. Then by means oi the key, the pick point is locked and positioned inwardly until it is firmly seated in the tapered socket and the flattened end of it extended into the slot 12.
In practical use, the operator provides himscli with one pick body portion and a number of pairs of pick points. The pick points are placed in position in the body portion, as before described. It has been found that the points are held in the body portion suiliciently to withstand ordinary usage without becoming loosened and each time the pick is used, the points become more Iirmly seatcd and held in the tapered socket. When the points have been worn, the operator simply forces the wedge 18 through the openings 12 and in this way loosens both pick points at the same time and new oncs are placed in position in the same manner, as before described, and the pick is again ready [or use. The [lattcned portions at the inner end of the pick points prevent them lrom turning and as they are not likely to be loosened from engagement with the pick body unless they are turned they are firmly held even without the set screw 17. The rounded inner edges of pick points, will admit the key 18 between them and a slight pressure upon the key is suilicient to drive it into the opening 12 far enough to release the pick points. Obviously any other tools, such as an ax blade, an adz blade, a hammer and so forth, may be formed upon the tapered ends and inserted in the body portion in the same manner.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi the United States, therefor isminer-s pick. comprising a head having a handle socket formed on its under side and having a transverse slot through its central portion and two tapered openings exlcndcd from the ends of the head toward said transverse slot and flattened openings extending from the tapered openings to the interior of the transverse slot and two detachable pick points. each having a round tapered end portion with a flattened portion at the inner end of each tapered end portion, said pick points inserted in the tapered openings with the flattened portions thereof projected through the flattened openings and into the trans verse slot. said head shaped to protect the adjacent ends or the pick points and to completely cover them, said pick points being so arranged within the head that they may be jointly driven from the head by a wedge passed through the transverse slot.-
