JULES VARET, OF CAMDEN ROAD, LONDON, ENGLAND.
COLLAR STUD, BUTTON, OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
Application filed July 6. 1905. Serial No. 268,333.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jonas VARET, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 522 Caledonian road,
the like without disfiguring the latter, is well known, and the primary object of the present invention is to facilitate that operation, and to enable the same to be accomplished without injury to the shirt, collar or the like,
The invention also has for its object to enable buttons, such as those applied to gloves and other articles of wearing apparel, to be readily passed through their button holes.
According to the said invention, I employ a tool or instrument, hereinafter termed the buttoner, adapted to be detachably secured at one of its ends to the stud or button in such manner that the tool and stud or button are rigidly secured together, the buttoner then serves as a handle by which the stud or button can be drawn through the holes in the collar or other article, without the necessity of applying pressure or support to the back of the stud or button, after which the said buttonencan be disengaged from the stud or button.
According to one form of construction, the head or other convenient part of the stud or button is formed or otherwise provided with a fastening device for engagement with the buttoner, the latter co-acting there- With. The free or outer end of said buttoner may be fashioned as a button hook, or other useful instrument.
In order to facilitate the operation of drawing the stud or button through the hole, the buttoner has its shank tapered so as to gradually enlarge or open the button hole as it passes therethrough.
The fastening means may be of any suitable character, and may, for example, consist of a threaded recess in the head of the stud and a correspondingly threaded end to the tool adapted to screw into the recess, or vice versa, of an external screw thread upon the head of the stud and a threaded recess in the end of the buttoner.
When the end of the buttoner has been detached from the stud, it may be inserted into, or otherwise connected with, a hilt or handle in the same manner The difficulty of inserting a stud in a shirt, collar or as that in which it is secured to the stud, and in this position it is very convenient for use, in its alternative application.
It will be obvious that the invention may also be usefully applied to buttons such as those used in connection with gloves or other articles of wearing apparel.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood, and readily carried into effect, I will now describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a collar stud and buttoner shown detached, but adapted to be connected together and embodying the features of my said invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of a slightly modified form of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view of a handle for use in connection with the buttoner exempli- [led in Fig. 1, the said buttoner being shown in dotted lines in readiness for insertion into the handle; and Figs. 4: and 5 illustrate further forms of the application of the invention.
In all the above figures, A is the stud or button, and B the shank of the buttoner for attachment thereto. In the example illustrated in Fig. 1, the head a of the stud A is provided with the screw threaded hole a, while the thicker end or base of the buttoner B is furnished with a screw threaded extension b adapted to fit into and engage with the hole a, The said base also has a concave face or recess b to enable it to lie neatly against the convexsurface of the head surround ing the hole a I In the example shown in Fig. 2, the head a is furnished with the screw threaded extension a, while the base of the buttoner has a corresponding screw threaded hole b".
In Fig. 3 e is a hilt or handle to be attached to the buttoner B for facilitating the handling thereof.
Fig. 4 is an elevation, partly in section, of a stud A and buttoner B, the base of the latter having a cupshaped recess to fit over the correspondingly shaped head a of the stud, when the screw b projecting from the center of the base of the buttoner B is screwed into the screw threaded hole a in the head of the stud a. 111 this figure the head of the buttoner B is shown formed with an eye by which the handle may be suspended when desired.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of a stud A and a buttoner B. The head a of the stud, in this case, is fiat with a central screw threaded hole a therein and the base of the buttoner B is correspondingly shaped and has a screw b projecting centrally therefrom. .The head of the buttoner B is, in this case, shown spear-shaped which facilitates the introduction of the handle through the button hole.
By the means hereinbeiore described, a stud, button or the like may be readily drawn into position in a hole in the shirt, collar, glove or the like Without risk of injuring the appearance thereof or the stud or button.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to scure by Letters Patent is:
The combination of a stud or button having a screw threaded part and a handle or holder therefor constructed to be capable of passing through a button hole and having at one end a screw threaded part arranged to engage with 10 the threaded part of the stud or button. substantially as described.
