Description

No. 870,449.- PATENTED NOV. 5, 1907. A. 0. MAY.
PIPE AND NUT WRENGH.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 17. 1907.
FFIGE.
ALVA 0. MAY, OF MASSILLON, OHIO.
FIFE AND NUT WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1907.
Application filed January 1'7, 1907. Serial No. 352,788.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA 0. MAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe and Nut. Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to pipe wrenches, the object being to provide a pipe wrench which can be easily and quickly put on or taken off a pipe, and one which will readily grip the pipe so that it can be readily held or turned.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pipe wrench which is so constructed thatit can be readily used for turning nuts and the like with the same results.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in theclailns.
In the drawing forming a part. of this speciticationz- Figure l is a side elevational view of my improved wrench applied to a pipe. Fig. 2 is top plan view oi the wrench applied to a pipe.
In the drawing A indicates a handle formed 01' any suitable metal having teeth A formed in one of its edges and an enlarged portion A formed at its forward end provided with an outwardly extending lip A having a concaved edge A forming a jaw. Studpins A project out from each side of the enlarged portion A of the handle, on which is pivotally mounted the apertured wall of the biiuracted end B ol a curved jaw B, adapted to iit around the pipe or nut to be turned. The ends of the walls of the bifurcation are reduced and are provided with a series of openings B in which thelinks O are adapted to be secured by pins C, the other ends of the links 0 being pivotally connected to the sides of a sleeve D, slidably mounted on the handle by pins G The sleeve is provided withspaced apertured ears D in which is mounted a pin E carrying a pawl E, which is adapted to be forced through an opening D in the sleeve, into engagement with the teeth of the handle by a coil-spring F, arranged under the end of the pawl, so that by pressing down on the pawl and sliding the sleeve forward and backward on the handle the jaw will be opened and closed as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a handle having a toothed edge and provided with a jaw at one end, of a jaw provided with a bifurcated end'pivotally mounted on said jaw, a sleeve mounted on said handle provided with a pawl adapted to engage the teeth of the handle and links pivotally mounted on said sleeve connected to the ends of the pivoted jaws to the rear of its fulcrum.
2. The combination with a handle having a toothed edg and an enlarged end having a curved edge, of a jaw pivoted over said end, a sleeve mounted on said handle provided with a pivoted pawl adapted to engage the toothed edge of the handle, and links pivotally mounted on said sleeve adjustably connected to said pivoted jaw, for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a handle having a toothed edge and an enlarged end having a curved edge, of pins projecting out said enlarged end of the handle, a curved jaw provided with a bifurcated end having apertured walls mounted on said pins, links adjustably mounted in said apertured Walls, a sleeve slidably mounted on said handle connected to said links-and a spring-actuated pawl mounted on said sleeve adapted to engage said teeth on the handle, for the purpose described.
ALVA C. MAY.
