Be it known that we, LEE ODELL, JACOB W. NOBLE, and JEssE F. SANDRooK, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Tylersburg, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to cuspidors, and the invention has for its object to provide a sanitary cuspidor, wherein a disinfectant or antiseptic is employed. for destroying the germs, bacteria, or harmful and contagious foreign matter or spittle.

Our invention aims to prevent the spread of disease such as tuberculosis by the germs of spittle being inhaled. we have designed a cuspidor adapted for public or private use, said cuspidor being constructed whereby it can be conveniently used 'upon the streets and house spittle and.

such matter as is expectorated or discharged by persons.

To this end, our improved cuspidor comprises 'a suitable housing or cabinet having two receptacles containing a disinfectant. In one of said receptacles is mounted one or more sponges or pieces of absorbent material adapted to be elevated to receive spittle, while the other of said receptacles serves to receive the overflow or solid matter deposited in the first mentioned receptacle. We have also devised novel means in connection with the cuspidor for preventing the evaporation of the disinfectant, and novel means for elevating the sponge or absorbent material.

The detail construction entering into our invention will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of our improved cuspidor, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a part of the mechanism contained within the same.

To put our invention into practice, we

provide an outer receptacle or cabinet 1 which may be of any desired contour and suitably ornamented to present a neat and attractive appearance. In the present instance, the cabinet or receptacle is cylindrical In this connection in form and is provided with an interior annular flange 2 approximately midway between the top and bottom for supporting a horizontal partition 3, said partition being detachably mounted upon the flange 2. The receptacle or cabinet is closed by a cover {1 having a central opening 5 and a slot 6 formed therein, said annular opening being normally closed. by a lid 7, which is pivotally mounted in the slot 6, as at 8.

The horizontal partition 3 divides the cuspidor into upper and lower compartments 9 and 10, respectively, and in the compartment 9, we detachably mount a receptacle 11 adapted to contain an antiseptic or disinfectant 12. The receptacle 11 is provided with a depending overflow pipe 14 passing through the partition 3 and communicating with a receptacle 15 mounted in the compartment 10.

The inner side of the receptacle or cabinet 1 is provided with a bracket 16 and pivotally connected to said bracket as at 17, is a lever 18. One end of said lever carries a plate 19 upon which is suitably secured a sponge 20 or a similar absorbent material. The opposite end of the lever 18 is connected by a rod 21 to a tread lever 22, said lever being pivotally mounted in the compartment 10, as at 23. The lever 22 is formed with a circular band or ring 24 to span the receptacle 15 and the forward end of said lever protrudes through a slot 25 formed in the receptacle or cabinet, and is provided with a thread plate 26.

To open and close the lid 7, we provide said lid with a rearwardly extending arm 27 connecting by a link 28 with a lever 29, pivotally mounted upon a depending bracket 30, carried by the partition 3. The lever 29 connects by a link 31 with the rear end of the tread lever 22, said end of the tread lever be ing normally held in a lowered position by a coiled spring 32 connecting with said lever and the bottom or base plate of the housing or cabinet.

In order that the lid 7 will be slightly opened in advance of the elevation of the sponge 20, we provide the lower end of the rod 21 with a slot 33, and the lever 22 with a pin 34. Thus when the tread lever 22 is de pressed the lid 7 will be opened through the medium of the links 28 and 31, slightly in advance of the elevation of the sponge, or absorbent material 20, which is elevated through the medium of the rod 21 and lever 18.
