To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE S. WARNooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Printers Registering Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to printers registering devices, and hasfor its object the provision of an improvement upon that class of registering devices comprising blocks, racks within the blocks and gearing cooperating with the racks for moving the hooks of the registering devices along the blocks.
In my application Serial No. 283,651, filed October 20, 1905, I have set forth one type of printers registering devices to which my present invention is particularly adaptable. In the device of my said application, I have employed a rack, in the form of a threaded screw, normally stationary and mounted at its ends in the end walls of a suitable block, the base of the register hook carrying train gear elements that cooperate with said rack, one of said elements being accessible through the body of the hook,.whereby the entire traveling hook structure may be moved. In the said device, the train gear elements carried by the traveling hook structure were a worm-wheel in engagement with the rack, and a worm-shaft, which latter element is directly accessible through the traveling hook structure and is in gear with the worm- Wheel.
In my present invention, I desirably also employ a worm-wheel carried by the traveling hook structure and the worm-shaft in engagement with the worm-wheel, which worm-shaft is accessible through the traveling hook structure. The worm-wheel, however, is desirably not in direct engagement with the rack element but is in fixed relation with a pinion, practically forming a part of the worm-wheel structure, which pinion is in engagement with a rack element. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, there are two pinions, one at each end of the worm-wheel and there are two rack bars, one for engagement with each pinion. The rack bars are preferably integrally formed with the block that contains the traveling hook structure.
It is the main object of my present invention to provide a supporting means for the traveling hook structure that will serve to maintain the traveling hook structure in proper position with respect to the contain: ing block, so that it will be impossible for the hook structure to tilt during the clamping operation. To this end, supporting and restrainingmeans is provided upon which the traveling hook structure rides, and which serves to direct the traveling hook structure in a line of travel exactly parallel with the horizontal bed of the press. The supporting means desirably resides in one or more rods passed longitudinally through the containing block in a direction parallel to the top of the block, the base of the traveling hook structure resting directly upon these rods. The restraining means for confining the base of the hook to its proper direction of travel desirably resides in insetting overhanging lips margining the top of the block, the rack bars, desirably integrally formed with these insetting lips and disposed on the nether surfaces thereof, the pinions in engagement with the rack bars, and the jaw of the traveling hook structure which engages the top of the containing block. There is no appreciable lost motion between the pinions and the rack bars and between the jaw and the top of the block, and as the pinions are separated from the jaw longitudinally of the structure, it will be seen that no tilting action of the traveling hook structure is possible. The tilting action is avoidable without depending upon the supporting rods, but I prefer the use of the supporting rods as a further safeguard, and when these rods are employed, there is likewise no appreciable lost motion between the same and the base of the traveling hook structure.
'I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred embodiment thereof, in which Figure 1 is a' plan view of my improved structure. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the hollow block with the contents housed thereby removed. Fig. 3 is a sec.- tional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. "insetting lips and the rack being desirably made out of cast white metal, though, of course, I do not wish to be limited to the integral formation of the parts mentioned, nor the material of which these parts are constructed. The base 0 of the hook structure has an aperture passed transversely and horizontally therethrough, in which aperture there is disposed a worm-wheel e which is in fixed relation with pinions f disposed at the ends of the worm-wheel.
This fixed re lation with the pinions and worm-wheel may be secured by mounting the worm-wheel and pinions upon a square shaft 9, though,-of course, I do not limit myself to the manner of securing the fixed relation of these pinions and worm-wheel. As will be observed, the axis of rotation of the worm-wheel and pin ions is horizontal. Another aperture or recess is passed vertically through or into the hook structure, in which recess there is disposed the worm-shaft it having a vertical axis of rotation. This wormshaft has a square bore at its upper portion adapted to receive the square end of a key i. The worm-shaft it has a journal at its lower end in the base of the hook structure, and has a thrust bearing at its upper end, which thrust bearing resides in the downward extension is of the jaw Z. The portion k of the jaw (which portion is circular in horizontal section) carries an annular groove m that receives the pins 7 that are fast in the base of the traveling hook structure. T hese pins 7L prevent the vertical displacement of the jaw occasioned by upward thrust of the wormshaft it, while at the same time permitting the jaw Z to rotate to suit the angle at which a printing plate is to be held in the base of the press. The jaw Z, therefore, does not turn in a spiral path, but turns in a path whose plane is perfectly parallel with the upper surface of the block. With the jaw, the block and the pinions, bearing .the relation that they do, and the pinions being separated from the jaw longitudinally of the base of the-traveling hook structure, the traveling hook structure is not likely to be tilted.

While I prefer the use of the rods 0, I do not wish to be limited to this means of supporting the traveling hook structure Where such a support is to be employed, as another support may be substituted, such as that indicated in Figs. 7 and 8, where there is illustrated a zigzag spring element p which may be inserted in grooves in the longitudinal sides of the block, as indicated in Fig. 8.
It will be observed that the rack bars take no part in carrying the traveling hook structure, this function being performed by either thgL jaw or the rods 0 or by both the jaw and ICC s.
While I prefer the type of gearing shown in the drawing, I do not wish to be limited to this type of gearing, as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention in this regard.
It is obvious that changes may readily be made in the embodiments of the invention herein shown and particularly described, without departing from the spirit thereof, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the precise construction shown, but,
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. A registering device including a block separably contained in the plate formation, a traveling hook structure movable back and forth therein, a rack, and operating gearing carried by the traveling hook structure in gear with the rack, the point of engagement of the gearing with the rack being separated longitudinally of the block with respect to the jaw of the traveling hook structure, said jaw engaging the top of the block.
2. A registering device including a block separably contained in the plate foundation, a travelinghook structure movable back and forth therein, two racks, one upon each longitudinal side of the block and at the top thereof, operating gearing carried by the traveling hook structure and. in engagement with said racks, the point of engagement of the gearing with the racks being separated longitudinally of the block with respect to the jaw of the traveling hook structure, said jaw engaging the top of the block, the racks being at the top of the block and interposed between that portion of the gearing engaging the same and the jaw, and supporting means for carrying the traveling hook structure independently of the racks.
17. A registering device including a block separably contained in the plate foundation and margined at its top by two racks, a trav'- eling hook structure within the block having operating gearing in engagement with the racks, and supporting means for carrying of the racks.

A registering device including a block separably contained in the plate foundation, said block having insetting lips at the top portion provided with racks on their nether surfaces, a traveling hook structure provided with operating gearing in engagement with said racks, and supporting means for carrying the traveling hook structure independently of the racks.

A registering device including a block separably contained in the plate foundation and margined at its top by a rack, a traveling hook structure within the block l'iaving operating gearing in engagement with the rack, and supporting means for carrying the traveling hook structure independentl of the rack.

A registering device including a block separately contained in the plate foundation, said block having an insetting lip at its top portion provided with a rack on its nether surface, a traveling hook structure provided with operating gearing in engagement with said rack, and supporting means for carrying the traveling hook structure independently of the rack.
