Description

N, PETERS. PHOTO-LITHQGRAPNER WASH N N UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoEI ALBERT L. SAYLES, OF PASOOAG, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO EDWIN O. CLEVELAND AND JOSEPH M. BASSETT, OF VORCESTER, MASS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 87,877, dated March 16, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. SAYLEs, of Paseoa-g, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spinnin g-Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication.
elers, and securing it to the spindles after In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation taken on the line :r of Fig. 2, of a spinning-frame provided with my improvements; andFig. 2 represents a sectional view of the same taken on the line y y of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The ring-rail A is supported on the ends of the oscillating arms B B, which derive motion from a heart-shaped cam, C, in the usual manner, for the purpose of laying or guiding' the yarn onto the bobbins, and it is so arranged as to have the right amount of vertical movement to lay the yarn from top to bottom of the bobbins, and vice versa, when not adjusted for laying it below the base of the bobbins, as will be presently shown.
The arm D, which is actuated by the heartcam C, and oscillates the rock-shafts E and E', carrying the arms B, is connected loosely to the shaft E, permitting it to turn in the end of the same. The latter supports a pawlarm, F, and bearings, for a ratchet-wheel, G, the hub of which is connected by a system of gears, I K L, also supported by the arm D, with a segment, M, secured to the rocking shaft E.
The shaft of the ratchet-wheel is provided at one end with a key, N, by which it may beturned in either direction by hand, when the pawls O and P are lifted out of connection with the ratchet-wheel.
By this arrangement the position of the arms B lnay be readily changed, with refen ence to the arm D, so as to cause them to have a higher or lower eld of operation, as may be desired; and when the pa'vls are connected with the wheel G, the said arms B are so locked, in connection with the arm D, as to be moved by it.
Vhen the bobbins are ready to be doffed, and just previously to stopping the machine for that purpose, the operator by means of the key N may, after lifting the pawls O and P out of connection with the ratchet G, so turn the shafts E and E through the gear-wheels connecting the said ratchet with the segment M on the shaft E, as to lower the ring-rail sufiieiently to allow the yarn to run below the base ot' the bobbin onto the spindle, where it will be held fast, and the yarn may be broken to deff the bobbins without disengaging it from the spindle, and when the new bobbins have been put on the reverse movement of the ratchet-wheel will raise the ring-rail, so as to lay the yarn again in the proper manner. The saving in time and labor thus effected will be obvious to persons skilled in the art.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the ring-rails A and oscillating arms B, with shaft E, arm D, ratchet G, gear-wheels K L I,.pawls O P, and segment M, substantially as herein described, for the purpose specied.
2. The combination, with the arm D and shaft E, of the ratchet-wheel G, gear-wheels K L I, pawls O P, and segment M, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ALBERT L. SAYLES.
