No. 878,751. Speccation of Anpiicatcn filed J'nusry '31, 1907. Sexl lo. 855.000.
To all 107i om 'it may concern.: i l Be it known that I, Join: Scnasmnn, a citizen of the United Str-ttes, and resident of Jersey Cit-y, Hudson county, New Jersey, i '5 have invented certain new and useful I'n-.i
rovcments in Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
The oh.' .ctof my invention is to provide improved means to permit the ready application oi' boxes, barrels etc., upon, and their r removal from, .trucks used in stores, warehouses and other places for moving goods from placeto place, and the invention couinises a truck provided with a pivotal or tilting iackagc holder adapted to lie overthe trurnl, and also to swing upwardly at one end of the truc-ir. and means .or 'permitting said package holder to slide back and forth upon the truck, wherebvwhcn a ackage is on the tioor and the tiuci: mo veli c ose thereto witl the package holder disposed against the side of the package and partly beneath the same the package may be rcadil y swung over upon the truck and then slid thereon, and when a package is upon the package holder ou the truck, the package may be readily slid off the truck, ihn ulcrum or pivotal point of the package holder serving to aid in applying the package to und removing it from the truck. I have shown my improvements as appliedv in connection with a truck of the class shown in Letters Patent granted to me April 3, 1906, No. 816,825, and my present improvements are shown applied on and connected with a movable latl'orm within the truck frame, .rhereb'Y tie package holder may be moved inward y upon the movable platform, so as to swing therewith wit-hin the outer truck frame, and whereby the package forni over one end of the truck frame to be tilted for receiving and discharging packages.
The invention also comprises the novel details of improvements that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyl ing drawings forming part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a truck embody ing my improvements, Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2, 2, in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, F ig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the plane of the line 3, 3, in Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the truck showing the package holder located over the same,
' end has one or Letters Patent; :intentes Feb. 11, isos.
Figs. J3 and 6 are detail views of bearings for the rollers of the movable platform, Fig. 7 is a detail of one end of the truck frame, and Fig. 8 is a detail section on the line 8, 8, in Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate co1' res onding parts in the several views.
n the example of in improvements shown in the accompanying rawmgs the numeral 1 indicates a truck frame made of suitable side bars, shown in rectangular form, open centrally to receive thc swinging platform or frame 2, which is supported by pivots 3, so as to tilt within the main frame, the pivots 3 being shown disposed in bearings 3* carried by the end bars l of frame-1. The side and end bars of the mainframe may be composed of wood or metal and may be`braecd at the corners, and said frame 1s shown provided with rollers or casters 4 at the ends, and preferably will have rollers or casters 5 between the ends, but extending lower than the rollers 4 to permit the truck to be readily swung around a floor and moved thereover without interference by the rollers 4. Between the main frame 1 and the movable platform or frame 2 I provide one or more locks adapted to hold thc platform horizontally within frame 1 and preferably so that the u er surface of latiorm 2 and frame 1 wil e substantial flush, which lock devices are shown in the form of bolts 7 having springs 8 to push them under the platform, and with an eye or handle 9 to permit Withdrawal of the bolts. The above named parts may all be, generally, substantially the same as shown in my stent above named. For the purpose,-
ovyever, of permittinglthe platform 2 to tilt at a greater angle to t e tioor than is shown in my said patent I incline the outer lon itudinal edges of the platform in downwar ly converging lines at 2* (Fig. 2), as by cutting away the material at the lower edges of the longitudinal side bars 2 of the platform, whereby the packs. e resting upon the platform may be tilte to a greater angle than where the side bars of the platform are left rectangular as shown in my said atent.
At 10 is a tiltin package hol er adapted to overlie the truc and sllde thereover, and said holder-is shown pivotally connected with a slide or plate 11, as'by suitable hinge connections 12, and the holder 10 at its outer more projections or fingers 10 adapted to slide under the package 13 iss (see Fig. The slide or plate 11 is slidably held upl n the Iplatform of the truck, for which purpose have shown said platform rovidcd with slots 2b receiving studs or olts 14, 15, rigidly attached to and depending from slide 11, and shown provided with means, such as washers 16 bearing on adje: cent abutinents 2d beneath the platform and held b v nuts 14, 15, to inovably reliain slide 11 in position upon the r1platform anc keep it frointilting thereon. hns,- wlien the piate or slide 11 is pushed to the left`in the drawings it will carry the". package holder 1d to the ot ier end or margin of the truck frame, so that it may swing u wardly, as shown in Fig. 3, to receive a pac age against the saine, and said holder may be swung substantially parallel with the truck and drawn in over the same when slide 11 is pushed along the truck, as in Fig. 4. To permit the plate or slide 11, and also the package upon the truck, to more readily slide thereon I provide rollers 18 disposed transversely of the truck, which are shown set in recesses 19 in platform 2 and provided with trunnions or pivots 1S, shown journaled in suitable bearings 20 in the side bars 2c of platform 2, and provided with removable lates 22 to hold trunnions 18 in their bearings and permit removal of the rollers if necessary.
To permit the plat-e or slide 11-to be conveniently manipulated from the end of the truck opposite the delivery end I have shown a rod 23 movably connected with stud 15 and assing forwardly beneath the truck frame, t e free end of said rod being held in a suitable keeper 24 on cross bai 1 of the truck frame, and in order that said rod 23 will not project unduly far beyond the front of the truck and yet perinit said rod to be pushed back as required, I have shown an extension or arm 25 pivotally connected with rod 23, as by eyes at 26, whereby the extension 25 may be swung sidewse and supported upon a suitable hook or the like 27 carried by the truck frame.
With my improvements, wllen a box, barrel or other package is to be placed upon the truck the plate or slide 11 is pushed to carry one end to the end or inagiii of the truck, so that the package holder l() inay swing-npwardly bevond the truck and its project-ion 10 may then be ple-ced under the package, as in Fig. 3, and then the package is swung over toward thc truck, upon the pivotal point 12 as a fulcruin which assists the swinging of the package from the floor to a plane. above the truck and partly thereon, and then slide 11 with the package holder 1U and the package are pushed over upon the truck, or the rod 23 may be pulled for the purpose, the rollers 18 aiding the travel of the packa e along the truck. When the packageis to e unloaded from the truck the slide 11 and its package holder '10 with a package thereon are slid to the end of the truck and then the package is tilted over the end of the truck, the package holder 10 swinging on the fulcrum 12 and thus assisting in discharging the package upon the floor, and then the truck from the package.
connection with a truck havin r a t ting or swinging platform as shown in il'ie drawings, the package may be placed upon and removed from the truck in the manner above described, and when 'che latform is to be tilted, as in dotted lines inBFig. 2, within the open space within truck frame 1 the platform will be swung upon its pivots 3, the package will be inclined in front of the operator for packinu or unpacking the same, and the package ho within the space within ame of the truck will not interfere with the tilting of the platform 2, and the package may remain in relative position with respect to the package holder 10.
lt will be understood that my im rovenients are equally ap licable on a trucl; having a rigid top or p atorm as well as one having a tilting or movable platform, for in either ease the slide and package holder assist in applying packages upon or removing them from a truck.
Having now described my invention what I claim is 1.
