To all whom 'it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN MCE. AMES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dongan Hills, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double Body-Bolsters for Railway-Cars of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in double body-bolsters for passenger cars, and it consists in the novel features and structure hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. y 4
The object of the invention is to provide a novel, durable, easily constructed and entirely efficient cast doubleybody-bolster in one integral casting adapted for passenger cars'and enabling the use of structural beams for the center ory draft sills and side sills in lieu of wooden center and side sills commonly used in the construction of passenger cars.
The invention will be fully understood from lthe detailed descri tion hereinafter presented, reference being ad to the accompanying drawings, in which: i

In the drawings, 10 designates the sideframes of the double bod bolster, 11 a central `beam extending in line with the length of the car and connecting said side-frames, 12 end-beams4 connecting said sidel frames at their end ortions, and 13 beams connecting said side, rames at points between the central beam 11 and end-beams 12, the whole being in one integral casting and said side frames being approximately in their body portion of I-shape in cross-section and formed integrally upon the upper surfaces of their end portions with the vertical flanges 14 which strengthen the structure and aflord means forthe proper securing of the car sidesills and bolster together.
The side-frames 10 are deeper at their middle than at their end portions, and the middie portions of the top horizontal flanges of said side-frames are ony about the same horizontal plane with` the general upper` surface' of the central connecting beam 11, while at their end portions the said flanges incline downwardly and merge into the end beams 12as shown in Fig. 2. The flanges 14 are formed upon the end portions of the top horizontal flanges of the side-frames 10 and to these flanges 14 are secured an le plates or knees 15 to which the car side-sil 16 may be riveted. The ends of the tp and bottom flan es of the side-frames 10 merge into the endeams 12, which are triangular in crosssection, as shown in Fig. 2, and aflordseats for the side-sills 16, the lower flanges of said v side-sills resting upon said beams 12 and passing below the outer ends -of the angleirons or knees 1,5. l
The side-frames 10 are formed at opposite v sides of each end of the central beam 11 with recesses 17 to receive the center or draft-sills 18, and at the ,base of saidrecesses 17 and extending be ond the outer side edges of the same, the si e frames 1,0 are formed integrally with horizontal flanges 19 between which and themain lower flan es of said side frames are vertical llaterally extending flanges 20. 4The flanges 19 afford durable seats for the sills 18 and the recesses 17, in the construction shown in Fig'. 2, are e ual in depth to the height lof Sensus, he flanges 19 extend4 horizontally on both sides of t e web of the side frames and afford adequate seats for the center sills 18, which may be secured to the webs of the side framesby means of the angle-irons or knees 21 riveted lto said webs at op osite sides of .each recess 17. The bottom Eanges of the side-frames 10 are widened at the1r central portions, as at 22, and the flanges 19 extend outwardly at the base of the recesses 17 to substantially' the full vidth of said widened portions 22 and thence incline inwardly to the webs of said side-frames. At the inner sides of the side-frames 10, the flan es 19 are joined to the -web of" the central eam 11 by gussetflanges 23, which with the flanges 19 create a very durable structure at the adjoining connected web-portions of the side frames 10 and said beam 11.
The connecting beam 11 comprises a main horizontal upper flange 24, a lower flange 25 and a vertical web 26 connecting these flanges, the whole forming approximately in cross-section a beam of I-shape whose-ends are integral with the side-frames 10. Intermediate the flanges 24, 25 of the beam 11 is formed a central cylindrical section 27 for the usual center-pin, and centrallyl below the flan e 25 is formed the body center-bearing 28.
The beams 12 connecting the end portions of the side frames 10 are triangular 1n crosssection, and the connecting beams 13 are preferably ofA I-shape in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 2. At their central portions I preferably widen the lower flanges of the beams 13, as at 29, and form vertical webs 30 connecting the members of said beams, thereb strengthening said beams 13 at their centra portions.
The entire double body-bolster, less the top-plates 31, is formed in one integral casting ready to receive the center and side-sills, and the said bolster has been designed with a view of securing an efficient distribution of the metal throughout the same and of producing a structure' capable of ready manufacture and of great strength and durability.
The top-plates 31 are riveted to the top flanges of the side-frames 10 and, in the construction shown in Figs. '1, 2 and 3, extend continuously across the recesses 17 and over the center-sills 18.
In Fig. 4 I illustrate a modification in the pro ortions of the parts of the bolster, this mo ification residing in lessening the depth of those portions of the bolster. located above the horizontal laterally extending flanges 19 so that the center-sills may project above the side-frames 10, as shown. In this construction the top-plates on the sideframes extend through the webs of the center-sills.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A cast double body-bolster comprising two side-frames and a central beam connecting the same and inte ral at its ends therewith, said side frames eing formed through their upper ortions at opposite sides of each end of said cam with independent recesses and horizontal flanges at the bases thereof, said recesses bein adapted to closely receive car center-si ls` and the webs of said side frames at op osite sides of said recesses affordin means or securing said sills; substantial y as set forth.
2. A cast double body-bolster comprising two'side-frames and a central beam connecting the same and inte ral at its ends therewith, said side frames eing formed through their upper ortions at opposite sides of each end of said earn with independent recesses and horizontal flanges at the bases thereof, sald recesses being adapted to closely receive car center-sills and the webs of said side frames at opposite sides of said recesses affording means for securing said sills, combined with top plates secured upon said side frames and engaging said sills; substantially as set forth.
3. A cast double body-bolster comprising two side-frames and a central beam connecting the same and integral at its ends therewith, said side frames being formed through their upper ortions at opposite sides of each end of said lbeam with independent recesses and horizontal flanges at the bases thereof, said recesses being ada ted to closely receive car center-sills and t e webs of said side frames at opposite sides of said lrecesses being rovided withknees extending from both s1des of the webs for securing said sills, combined with top plates secured u mn said side frames and engaging said sills; substantially asset forth.
4. A cast double body-bolster comprising two side frames of I-shape and a central beam connecting the same and integral at its ends therewith, said side frames being formed through their upper portions at opposite sides of each end of said beam with independent recesses and horizontal flanges at the bases thereof, said recesses being adapted to closely receive car center-sills and the webs of said side frames at op osite sides of said recesses affording means or securing said sills, combined with top plates riveted upon said side frames and extending across said recesses and over the tops of said sills substantially as setforth.
5. A cast double body-bolster com )rising two side frames of I-sha e and a central beam of I-shape connecting t 1e same and'integral at its ends therewith, said side frames being formed through their upper portions at opposite sides of each end of said beam with indeendent recesses and horizontal flanges at the liases thereof, said recesses being adapted to closely receive car center-sills and the webs of said side frames at opposite sides of said recesses bein provided with knees extending from botfi sides of the webs for securing said sills, combined with top plates riveted to said side frames and crossing said recesses; substantially as set forth.

A cast double body-bolster comprising two side frames of I-shape and a centrall beam connecting the same and integral at its ends therewith, said side frames being inclined downwardly at their end portions to afford seats for metal side-sills and formed through their up er sides of each end of) said beam with in ependent recesses and horizontal flanges at the bases thereof, said recesses being adapted to closely receive ca'r center-sills and the webs of said side frames at opposite sides of said recesses affording means for securing said sills, combined with top plates riveted on ilo portions at opposite amuse said sideframes and crossing said recesses; substantiall as set forth.
7. A' dou le body-bolster comprising cast side-frames of I-shape, an integral central beam connecting the same, and beams connecting said side frames at their ends, said side frames being recessed to receive car center'- sills and inclinin downwardly at their'endportions toward said end beams and having integral fla es affording means for securing lcar side-sills; substantially as set forth. 9. A double body-bolster comprising in one integral casting two side frames, a central beam connecting the same, end-beams of angle iron shape yconnecting said side frames at their ends, and beams connecting said side frames between said central and end beams, said side framegaat their ends being inclined downwardly and. formed with vertical flanges to which said side-sills maybe secured, and said side frames being formed through their u vper portions at -opposite sides of each en of sald central beam with inde endent recesses and horizontal flanges at t e bases thereof, said recesses being adapted to closely receive'car center-'sills and thev webs of said side frames .at said recesses affording means for securing said sills, cornbined with top plates riveted upon said side frames and crossing said recesses; substantially as set forth.
10. A double body-bolster comprising in g one integral casting two side frames, a central beam connecting the same, end beams of angle-shape connecting said side -frames at their ends, and beams connecting said side frames between said central and end beams, said side frames being recessed to receive car center-sills and formed with `vertical flanges adjacent to said end beams, which afford seats for car side-sills, combined with top- 4 a central connectmg beam, said side plates secured upon and extendin continuously across the recesses in said si e frames; substantially as set forth.

A double bodf-bolster comprising in an integral casting si e frames ofI-sha e and a central connecting beam, said side ames at their end portions having their upper and lower flan es extended on converging lines and being ormed with vertical fla eswithin the depressions formed by the ownward inclination of said to flanges, and said side frames being recesse -to receive car centersills and formed at the base of vthe recesses with horizontal flanges; substantially as set forth.
12. A double body-bolster comprising -in an integral casting side frames oil-shape and ames at their end portions having their upper and lower flanges extended on converging lines and being ormed with vertical flanges within the depressions formed by the downward inclination Vof said top flanges, and said'side frames being recessed to receive car centerlsills and formed at the base of the recesses with horizontal flanges, combined with topplates secured upon and extendin continuously across the recesses invsaid si e frames; substantially as set forth.
13. A double body-bolster comprising in I `one integral casting side-frames having top and botto'm flanges and r:onnecting web and a central connecting beam having top and bottom flanges and connectin web Joined to said side-frames, said sideames bein recessed through their u per portions at eac side of each end of sai central beam to receive car center-sills and formed at the base of the recesses with horizontal fla es affording seats for said sills, and said orizontal flanges 'at the inner side of said frames being joined integrally with `the web of said beam intermediate its top and bottom flanges by gusset flanges, ,combined .with top plates riveted on said side frames and crossing said recesses; substantial] as set forth.
