To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN SINCLAIR, a subj ect of the King of England, residing at Belfast, Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spanners and Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spanners and wrenches of the kind having a quick and a fine adjustment.
In a spanner according to this invention, the mechanism through which the quick adjustment is made comprises a fixed rack the teeth of which engage with other teeth on a member in the form of a rod or bar pivoted to the movable jaw of the spanner. The bar is in two portions one of which carries the above mentioned teeth, the other, in direct engagement with the movable jaw, being connected through a screw-thread and nut to the first part. The bar is spring-controlled and the quick adjustment is made by pressing the bar against the action of its spring to withdraw its teeth from engagement with the fixed rack so that the bar and the movable jaw to which it is pivoted can be slid into the desired position. After the quick adjustment has been made, the teeth are allowed to reengage and the fine adjustment is made by turning the nut. 2;"
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one construction of spanner or wrench according to this invention :Figure l is a view of the complete spanner, and Fig. 2 is a similar view with one of the side plates removed to show the internal mechanism.
' The fixed jaw A is made in one piece with or attached to a plate B forming part of the handle of the wrench. To this plate Bis fixed a rack C and a strip D carrying a spring E. Free to slide upon the plate B is the movable jaw F of the spanner. It is provided with a circular recess F forming the seating for the rounded end G of a bar G. This baris in two portions one pivotally connected by the rounded head G to the sliding jaw F, and the other part G engaging by means of teeth G with the fixed rack C. The portion G is pro vided with a screw-thread G and is held in engagement with the portion G by means of a nut H which engages with the thread G I and is held in a recess G in the adjacent part of the bar G. The two parts are kept in alinement by means of a tongue and recess as at G.
The rack C, the strip D and the fixed jaw A are provided with drilled holes J and a side late B covers over the rack and the bar G G and the other parts of the mechanism, and is attached to the rest of the tool by means of rivets K.
In operation, the spanner is roughly set by depressing the end of the bar G G against the action of the spring E. This releases the teeth G from engagement with the rack C and the bar is then pushed or pulled to bring the movable jaw F into approximately the position required. This being done, the teeth G are allowed-to rengage with the rack C and any fine adjustment necessary is made by turning the nut H, thus moving the bar G and the sliding jaw F slightly in relation to the portion G This construction, while enabling an approximately correct adjustment of the spanner to be made very quickly, is further advantageous in that the rack C and the teeth G which engage with it can be made large and strong so as to withstand the wear and tear to which the working parts of a spanner are subjected.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a spanner or wrench the combination of a handle plate, a fixed jaw thereon, a movable jaw sliding on said handle plate, a compound bar G in two portions, one portion pivoted to the movable jaw and the other portion movable relatively to the pivoted portion, said bar extending parallel with and beyond the handle plate, means for quickly engaging and disengaging the bar and the handle plate and. means for moving the two portions of the bar relatively to each other, substantially as set forth.
2. In a spanner or wrench the combination of a handle plate B, a fixed jaw thereon, a movable jaw'sliding on said handle plate, a recess F in said movable jaw, a compound bar G having a head G pivoted in the recess, a rack C on the handle plate, teeth G on a movable portion G of the bar adapted to engage with the teeth on the rack, a spring E acting to keep said teeth normally in engagement with the rack, a tongue on the movable portion G of the bar engaging with the recess on the other portion to kee said In testimony whereof I have signed my portions in alinement, a cover plate B inclosname to this specification in the presence of 10 ing the rack and thle adj aciislnt pocftipni1 of the two subscribing Witnesses.
