INIPROVEMCENT IN SAFETY-BARREL'FOR WATCHES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent a nd making part of the sama To a l l whom it ma/y concern: A
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. Es'rnLL, of the city of Richmond, and State of Indiana, have invented 'a new and useful' Improvement in Watches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification,
'my said invention, I will proceed to describe the same' with reference `to the drawings.
The main-wheel is recessed, forming an annular rim, or ange, near its periphery, which is grooved around its inner edge.
The main-spring barrel consists of a rim, or hoop, with one end closed. The open end of the barrel ts in to the recess in the main-wheel, where it is secured in a manner similar t6 the bayonet-catch, b'y means of the pins, or projections G and C', which are admittedV into the recess of the main-wheel by notches a and a',- from which latter the pins are free to turn in to the groove, around the inner edge of the flange, by which the barrel is secured to the wheel.

or 0', strikes. vThus-,when the watehis Wound, (which is done by Winding to the right in the usual manner,) a pin, O or C', is held against pin b, by which the barrel and` main-wheel are locked together, and by means of which the barrel is allowed to revolve backward, in-
dependent of the main-Wheel, and in the event of the sudden recoil of the main-spring, as the result of its breaking, or other cause, injury to other parts of the movement is prevented.
I do not claim connecting the mainfwheel to the I spiingbarrel, by means of a pin and projection, in such a manner that on the breakage of the main-spring, the
barrel is free to revolve, as I am aware that such adevice is not new.
Having thus'fully described my said invention,
What I claim, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent, is
Connecting the main-wheel with the main-spring barrel, by means of the groove and pins, when the main barrel is allowed to turn loosely on the mainwheel,.in the manner and for the purpose as set forth.
