, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Application filed May 6- 1907. Serial No. 372.210.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN MATTRESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yager, in the county of Humboldt, Stateof California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clippers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in animal clippers, and it has particular reference to a clipper embodying reciprocating knives.
In connection with a clipper of the above type, the invention aims as a primary object to provide novel means for operating such knives.
The invention aims as a further object to provide a plow for throwing off the clipped hair or wool and clearing a path for the knives.
The invention finally aims to provide a clipper which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and practical and efficient in use.
The details of construction will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clipper constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof, and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The invention in its practical embodiment comprises a frame 1 provided at its rear end with a handle 2 and in its body portion with a longitudinal slot 3 and a recess 4, the recess 4 being parallel to the slot 3 and of reduced length. Forwardly of said body portion is a Cplatform 5 cut away at its front edge to afior a shelf 6 and provided from the lower edge of said cut away portion and the upper edge of said shelf with a rearwardly extending recess 7 terminating adjacent said body portion. A shaft 8 is j ournaled in the walls of the slot 3 centrally thereof. Within the slot 3, said shaft carries a drive wheel 9, and within the recess 4 said shaft carries a wheel 10, serving incidently as a fly Wheel fand having crown teeth 11 on its upper surace. and is rolled along the body of the animal to be clipped. With this operation in view, the wheel 9 has a serrated tread surface 12.
- A plate 13 provided with cutting teeth 14 is fixed upon the shelf. In the recess 7 a lever 15 is arranged, which is pivoted intermediate of its length, as at 16. The lever 15 has pivotal connection at its front end with a plate 17, having cutting teeth 18 and suitably mounted for lateral reciprocating movement. The lever 15 is oscillated by connections from the wheel 10, and to this end a rotatable shaft 19 is supported in bearings 20 fixed at one side of the frame 1. The shaft 19 is provided adjacent the teeth 11 with a bevel pinion 20 in mesh with said teeth, and at its front end with a wheel 21, having an eccentrically disposed wrist pin 22 which is connected by a pitman or link 23, with the rear end of the lever 15.
A deflector plate 24 of suitable conformation, is supported on the platform 5 and is reinforced by a suitable brace or braces 25.
The function of this plate is to deflect the wool or hair which has been cut by the teeth 18 and 14 in their superposed relation. It will be noted that the lower end of the plate 24 is disposed rearwardly of'the teeth 18 in order to best attain this result.
The manner of use will be readily apparent from the foregoing description. As the wheel 9 is advanced, the shaft 8 and wheel 10 carried by said shaft, are rotated. Similar movement is imparted to the shaft 19 and the lever 15 is oscillated by means of the connections described to reciprocate the teeth 18 with relation to the teeth 14 in the well known manner.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
A device of the type set forth comprising a frame having a body portion, a handle rearwardly thereof, and a platform forwardly thereof, said body portion being formed with The wheel 9 constitutes a drive wheel a longitudinal slot, a shaftjournaled in the Walls of said slot and having an end projected therebeyond, a drive wheel having a serrated periphery fixed to said shaft within said slot, a wheel fixed to the projecting portion of said shaft and having crown teeth, a plate fixed on said platform having stationary cutting knives, a second plate supported for lateral sliding movement, a lever pivoted between its ends and at its front end pivoted to said sliding plate, said sliding plate having cutting teeth disposed above said crown teeth, a shaft supported from said frame longitudinally thereof, a pinion fixed on the longitudinal shaft and meshing with said crown 15 teeth, a wheel carried at the front end of the longitudinal shaft and having a wrist pin, and
a pitman interposed between said wrist pin and the rear end of said lever.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa- 20 Witnesses:
