Description
JOHN A.c o oK`. oF'oWE-GO, NEW YORK.
Leners Patmm. 87,760, mama/rch 16,1869. Y
IIPROVEMENT -IN BARRELHEAD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making' part of the lame.
Be it known that I, J HN A. 000K, of Owego, in
.the county of lTioga, and State of NewYork, have in-A vented a new and improved Mode of Securing Heads in Barrels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulland exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, inr which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel with the head in it, and partially locked.
Figure 25s a sectional view ofthe head. Figure 3is a top view of the head' as locked.
Figure 4 is a.perspective view of the middle and bottom sections, and locking-bar, showing the manner in'which they are connected.
Myinveution consists in a-barrel-head,'so.constructed that it can be 1ocked`or secured iin a barrel'without the use lof nails, or the displacement andreadjustment of the hoops, asis now required.
- Todo this, I make my barrel-head in three sections, as shown in the drawings. The longest, orstraight sides of these sections are recessed, so that they overlap each otherv when put together. To the bottom of the middle section is secured a cross-bar, upon the ends of which theside sections rest, and on its top is pivoted, by a centrescrew, or bolt, a cross or locking-bar, with bevelled ends.
Ovnytop of and around the outer sides of the side sections, are secured arc-shaped strips of wood, bevelled on their inside, to the same degree as the ends of the locking-bar.
The head is secured. in. thel barrel by slipping the .ends of the centre section into the annular groove in the inside of the end of the barrel.
The side sections are then laid upon the ends of the bottom cross-bar, and the lock-bar is turned around, across all three of the sections, its bevelled ends tting into the bevels of the arcfshaped st rips of wood, thereby pressing the side sections i'romthe centre section into the annular groove before named, by means of which the head is firmly locked vin the barrel.
I n the accompanying drawings; A isthe centre section, with its sides recessed, as at a a, iig. 4.
B is the cross-bar, attached to its bottom.
C is the locking-bar, working on the vpivot O. D D are the side sections, and
E E are-the arc-shaped strips'of, wood attached thereto.
Thearc-shaped strips of wood E E need extend but a short way along the sides of thesidesections DD. if preferred.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A barrel-headconstructed, arranged, and operating as herein described, consisting of the parts A and -D,
Vcircular flanges E, Vlocking-bar O, and cross-bar B, as
have hereunto set my hand, this 24th day of September, 1868.
