.JAMES WILLIAM KENNEDY, orV BURKE, New YORK.
SPRING WASHING-MACHINE.'
specincatioil 'of Letters Patent.
'resented Jan. 21, 190s.
Application filed April 12, i907-` Serial No. 367.862.
To all whom it may concern.'
he it known that JAMES WILLIAM KEN-` NEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burke, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Washing- Machines, cation. This invention is-a washing, machine and has`fo'r an object, to provide va simple machine of this character whereby the'clothes may be placedin the machine and automatically washed. I'
The' invention'further consists in providing I the driven shaft of the motor, with a hinged rjoint, whereby the shaft may be swung vertically after an operation of the machine and the lid removed therefrom, thus allowing the operator to conveniently work without obstruction by operating parts of the ma' chinery. l
In the drawings: Figure 1. is a side elevation of the machine.- `Fig. 2. is a vertical section. Fig. 3. is a side elevation with the vshaft swung up. Fig. 4. is a detail section'of the agitator shaft, showing the manner of. mounting the same .to the lid.` Fig. 5. is a section on the line` 5 5 of Fig. `4.
I Referring more specifically-to the/drawings a support for the tub is indicated at 10, which comprises legs 11, connected and braced by rods 12, and supported on topof the legs is atable 13. i
` The tub or suds box is indicated at 14, and comprises the bottom 15, the sides 16 and a top 17, which is provided at its center with an opening 18. Al lid 19, is provided forv closing said opening, and has at its center an opening 20 through which-is adapted to pass a vertical shaf-t '21. Adjustable vertically on the shaft 21, is a lower tubular section 22, which carries at its lower end a head 23, provided with the usual agitators 24. A screw 22', isy provided for holding the section 21 to the section 22 in its adjusted position. For holding the shaft to the lid 19, I form therein a circumferential groove 25, around which is adapted to pass the forked e'nds 26 of a bracket v1f), by bolts 29. 0n the upper end of the shaft 21'is shown a bevel gear 30, which meshes with a bevel gear 31 on a horizontal shaft.
The horizontal shaft comprises the inner- Section 32, and an outer section 33, hlnged of which the following is a specifi-A ets being 28, secured to the bottom ofthe lid together at 34. '1`heouter end of the `shaft is journaled in abearing 35, secured to one of the sides 16 by a bolt 36, and the inner end 32 of the shaft is supported by a bracket 37 secured to the top 17, and is provided at its upper end with ears 38, between which the shaft 32 is adapted to rest. Openings 39 are formed in the ears through which and above the shaft 32, is passed 'a pin 40, whereby the shaft is locked to the bracket'.
A motor 41 is `provided for operating the shaft 32, and is supported on the side of the table 13 by a brac et 42. This motor comprises a shaft 43 to which4 is attached one end of a coil spring 44, the other end being fixed to the casing 45. The motor is provided4 with the usual ratchet wheel 46, and detent 46'.' :One end of the shaft is squared at 4 7., for a winding key 48. A pulley 49 is fixed to the other/end of the shaft for the beltv 50, which is'4 passed over a pulley 51, on the section 33 of the shaft 32.h
I do not wish to limit myself to a washing machine, but itwill be seen, that my invention may be used in connection with churns,
and the like,.with equally eective results.
I claim:
The combination with a washing machine including an agitator shaft and a gear carried by the shaft, of inner and outer brackets supported upon the machine7 the inner bracket having ears at its. .upper end, -the louter bracket having `a, passage and arranged to lie in line with the ears, the ears of the inner bracket having alining passages,y a horizontally extending/shaft dlsposed between the ears of the innerbracket and arranged beneath the assag'es inthe ears, the outer end of the sha t being arranged in the passage in the outer bracket, a portion of the horizontal shaft between the inner and outer brackhinged, the horizontal shaft having a gear and arranged to mesh with the first mentioned gear, and `a removable pin disposed through the passages in the ears and above the horizontal shaft, for holding the shaft with its gear in mesh with the gear carrie'd by the agitator shaft.
In testimony whereof he affiXes his signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES WILLIAM KENNEDY.
