To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, ETHELBERT W. BUR- Rows, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarn-2n, in the county of l/Varren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful lick Attachment for Lamps and other Burners, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in wick attachments.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of lamp attachments, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient device adapted to be applied to all kinds of wicks, and capable of affording an increased flow of oil and of producing a steady light of increased brilliancy.

A further object of the inventionis to provide an automatically operable device of this character, which will not require adjustment after it has been applied to a wick, and. which will enable a wick to be used until it is practically entirelyT consumed by the flames.

Another object of the invention is to provide a wick attachment, which will afford a steady uniform feed of oil until the same is entirely consumed.

Furthermore, it is the object of the invention to provide a wick attachment, which will enable a bright steady flame to be obtained from low grade non-homogeneous oils.

Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawing Figure l is a side elevation of a wick attachment, constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a lamp wick. Fig. 2 is an ede view of a portion of the wick and the attachment. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. The device comprises a pair of side feeders, which in the accompanying drawing, are in the form of flat wicks 1, but which may be constructed of waste, or other absorbent material. The flat wicks 1 are secured by means of a clamp 2 to a central burning wick 3, and they are arranged at opposite sides of and fitted against the central wick, which is interposed between the side wicks, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The clamp maintains the side wicks in frictional engagement with the central wick, but does not interfere with the sliding of the central wick through the attachment, and the clamp in practice abuts against the bottom of a lamp burner 4, so that the side wicks will feed the oil to the central burning wick throughout the entire length of that portion extending below the burner. Although the device is shown applied to a lamp wick, yet it will be readily understood that it is applicable to stoves and all other forms of burners employing a wick and using liquid fuel.

The side wicks are designed to be of a length to extend from the burner to the bottom of a font or reservoir, not shown, so that they will afford a steady uniform flow or feed of oil to the wick until the oil within the font or reservoir is entirely consumed. `As they are adapted to increase the flow or feed of'oil, the brilliancy of the light will be increased and such flow or feed of oil will continue as long as there is a portion of the central burning wick in contact with the side wicks.

The clamp, which is preferably constructed of sheet metal, is'composed of two sides 5 and 6 connected by a central resilient portion 7, located at one edge of the clamp. The sides of the clamp are provided with upper and lower inwardly bent substantially L-shaped tongues 8, arranged in pairs and adapted to be bent inwardly around the side edges of the side wicks, whereby the latter are securely fastened to the sides of the clamp.

The tongues at the free edge of the side 5 are adapted to be engaged by a substantially T-shaped catch 9, located at the free edge of the side 6 and having laterally extending arms 10 for engaging the said tongues. The shank portion 11 of the catch is bent at right angles to arrange the arms l() in transverse planes, so that they may be readily engaged with the tongues at the free edge of the sides 6.

The sides of the clamp and the side wicks are adapted to be bent or closed around the central burning wick, and when the catch is engaged with the tongues at the free edge of the side 5, the clamp slidably connects the side wicks with the central burning wick, which may be drawn through the attachment by operating the wick-raising mechanism of the burner. After the attachment has been applied to the central burning wick, it does not require further adjustment and will not interfere with the adjustment of the central wick in turning the same u or down. As the side-wicks extend Vfrom tie burner to the bottom of the font or reservoir, they will feed crude or low grade non-homogeneous oils to the central burning wick effectively, when the central wick is either long or short.

Having thus 'fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A wick attachment comprising a pair or" side wicks adapted to 'Fit against the opposite sides of a central wick, and a clamp having two sides provided with substantially L-shaped tongues extending inwardly from the side edges of the clamp and interposed between the central. and side wicks and clamping the latter to the inner 'faces of' the sides of the clamp,and means for connecting the sidesof the clamp to cause the side Wicks to frictionally engage the central wick and permit the latter to slide through the attachment.

2. A wick attachment comprising a pair of side wicks, and a clamp composed of two sides connected together and provided at their side edges with tongues embracing the wicks at the side edges thereof, and a catch carried by one side of the clamp for engaging the tongues of the other side for holding the clamp and the side wicks in engagement with a central burning wick.

3. A wick attachment comprising a pair of side wicks, and a clamp consisting of sides, a resilient connecting portion, upper and lower tongues for engaging the side wicks, and a substantially T-shaped catch extending 'from ones side of the clamp and having its arms arranged to engage the tongues of the other side of the clamp.
