COMBINED HAMMER AND SCREW-DRIVER.
N o. 875,880. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed MayYZS. 1907. Serial No. 376.082.
Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ADOLPH J. ZIMMERMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 416 Oarondelet street, New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State ol Louisiana, y has invented certain new and uset'ul lmprovej has an extension which is turned laterally as shown at 12 and then upwardly as shown at 13, and these grooves receive a lateral pro,- jection 11i which is carried by the bit S, `for sliding movement o'lE this projection in the grooves.
ments in a Combined Hammer and Screw- Driver, of which the following is tion.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly to combination tools and has for its object to provide a tool of this variety which will include a hammer including the driver o r other bit arranged for movement into and out of the handle, 'the invention also including means for holding` the bit at times in retracted and at times in projected position.
Another object is to provide a tool of this kind so arrangedA that the head will act as a transverse handle by which the bit may be turned.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the followingdescription and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion ol this specification, and in which like numerals el' reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevational view of the present tool with the bit extended; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the handle with the bit in the position shown in Fig. 1 g j Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the handle a specilicae end oi the groove 9, the end of the bit pro jects slightly beyond the lower end oi the handle and thus the bit may be grasped and turned to bring the projection into the extension 10 and thence into the pocket 11, when the bit will be held within the handle as will be readily understood.
Then the bit is at the outward limit of its movement, the projection 14 may be moved into the extension 12 through rotation of the bit, and when the tool is in use, the projection may be brought into the portion 13 oi the extension to prevent return el the projection into the groove 9 when the handle is rotated. Means is thus provided 'for holding jected.
lVhat is claimed is:
In a combination tool, the combination with a handle having a transverse tool head at its upper end, the handle having a longitudinal'passage therewithin opening through the opposite end of the handle irom the tool head, the end oi the passage adjacent to the tool head being closed, said handle having a longitudinally extending interior groove formed in the wall olt the passage, said groove having a laterally and downwardly turned angular extension at its upper end and having a laterally and upwardly turned extension at its lower end, said extensions lying at a common side oi the groove, oll a bit slidably mounted in the passage and having a lateral projection extended into the groove -for movement therein and arranged to lie at times in the downwardly turned portion of the upper lateral extension to hold the bit retracted within the handle, and at times within the upwardly turned portion oi the lower lateral extension, to hold the bit projected from the handle.

with the bit removed, to illustrate the retaining slots; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section with the bit retracted. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the handle.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a handle 5 carrying a transverse hammer head 6 at one end. The handle has a longitudinal passage 7 Vformed therewithin and opening throughits lower end, and in this passage there is a bit S which is slidable to lie at times within the passage and to project at times beyond the end oi the handle.
Formed in the wall of the passage 7, there is a longitudinal groove 49 which, at its upper end, has a lateral extension 10 provided with a pocket 11 at its distal end from the groove 9. Adjacent to its lower end, the groove 9 When the projection 14 is at the upper,
the bit at times retracted and at times pro-
