To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL I-IENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVrenches and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for turning nuts, bolts, pipes, and like objects, and my object is to provide means for mounting the movable aw on the fixed aw.
A further object is to provide means for adjusting the movable jaw towards or from the fixed jaw, and a still further object is to provide means for holding the movable jaw in its adjusted position.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are, made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a lon itudinal, sectional view thereof showing the construction of the wrench when employed for turning objects having round or curved surfaces.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a shank, to one end of which is secured a fixed jaw 2, said being'extended at right angles to the axial plane of the shank.
Secured to the shank 1, adjacent its inter section with the fixed jaw, is a housing 3, the lower portion of said housing being provided with a loop 4, which fits around the shank 1 and is secured thereto by means of a bolt 5, which bolt is directed through alining openings in the shank 1 and walls of the loop 4, the bolt being preferably headed at each end to prevent the same from leaving the open mgs.
The outer portion of the housing 3 is provided with a socket 6, through which is disposed the shank 7, of a movable jaw 8 and, in order to secure said movable jaw in its adjusted position, the outer wall of the socket 6 is provided with an elongated slot 9,
through which extends the headed end 10 of l a locking bolt 11, the periphery of said bolt being threaded and extended through a threaded seat 12 in the shank 7.
The lower end of the bolt 11 is preferably pointed and adapted to engage counter-sinks or notches 13 in the inner wall of the socket 6 and it will be readily seen that as long as the point of the bolt is in engagement with the counter-sinks, the shank carrying the movable jaw will be held in its fixed position.
It will further be seen that by extending the locking bolt through the movable shank, the locking bolt may be released from the counter-sinks and the movable jaw adjusted and again secured in its adjusted position with the employment of but one hand of the operator, thereby leaving the other hand free to hold the wrench in position.
When the wrench is employedas a pipe wrench, the loop 4 is slightly enlarged so as to fit loosely on the shank 1 and the bolt 5 forms a pivot therefor, so that the movable jaw may have a slight rocking movement when the wrench is given a reverse rotation and the jaws are held in engagement with the object by securing a spring 14 to the shank 1 and extending the free end thereof into the loop 4 and below the wall of the socket in the housing 3.
In applying the wrench to use, the right or left hand is employed for releasing the locking bolt from the counter-sinks in the wall of the socket, while the opposite hand is employed for holding the wrench and, after the bolt has been loosened, the movable jaw is adjusted to the proper point by directing pressure on the headed end of the locking bolt and the bolt again turned into engagement with the counter-sinks, thereby firmly securing the movable jaw in its adjusted position.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very cheap and economical form of wrench and one that may be readily adjusted to accommodate objects of various sizes and it will further be seen that by enlarging the loop, so that it will fit loosely over the main shank, the housing will have a rocking motion thereon and the wrench employed for turning objects having round surfaces and, when the wrench is so employed, the meeting faces of the jaws are preferably provided with teeth, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
What I claim is: 1. A wrench of the class described, comprising a shank, a fixed jaw at one end of said shank, a housing on said shank having a socket, an elongated slot in the outer wall of the socket and counter-sinks 0n the inner wall thereof, a movable jaw, a shank for said movable jaw adapted to extend through said socket, said shank having a threaded seat therethrough and a threaded bolt extending through said seat and the slot in the outer wall of the housing and adapted to engage the counter-sinks in the inner wall of the socket and hold the movable jaw in its adjusted position.
2. In a wrench of the class described, the combination with a shank having a fixed jaw, a housing on said shank, said housing having a socket therethrough, the outer wall of which is provided with an elongated slot and the inner wall with counter-sinks; of a shank longitudinally movable through said socket, a jaw at one end of said shank and means extending through the movable shank and slot in the outer wall of the housing adapted to engage the counter-sinks and lock the movable shank in its adjusted position.
3. A wrench of the class described, comprising a shank, a jaw on said shank, said shank having a socket thereon, the outer wall of which is provided with a slot and the inner wall with notches, a shank slidably mounted in said socket, a locking bolt extending through the movable shank and slot in the outer wall of the socket and adapted to engage the notches on the inner wall of the socket, said bolt being movable with the shank.
