Be it known that I, ELBEIDGE LLEWELLYN SCEIBNEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amesbury, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches.
The object of the invention is to rovide a pipe wrench by means of which a arge surface of pipe or rod may be gripped, thereby reducing the possibility of crushing or bending the pipe.
Another object is to provide a wrench having a single tubular handle, in which the pivoted jaw operating mechanism is inclosed,
thereby forming a convenient, easily handled or operated wrench.
A further object is to provide a wrench of this character which is simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation and well adapted to the purpose for whichit is designed.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of arts, as will be hereinafter described and c aimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention 3 Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same 3 Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line 4--4 of Fig. 1. j Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the stock or handle of the Wrench, which is hollow or recessed longitudinally, the recess therein preferably opening through the back or rear edge of the stock, as shown. On one end of the wrench is formed a rigid jaw 2, having a concaved or segmental shaped, toothed pipe-engaging surface 8. The teeth 4 on said surface project upwardly and outwardly, as shown. Pivotally mounted in this end of the stock or handle 1 adjacent the fixed jaw 2 is the movable jaw 5 of the wrench, said jaw consisting of a concaved or segmental pipe-engaging portion having on its inner surface downwardly and inwardly rojecting teeth G. The jaw 5 has an integra shank 7, which pro- 'ects through the slot 8 formed at the inner end of the fixed jaw and communicates with the recess in the stock as shown. The shank 7 of the jaw 5 is ivotally mounted in said recess b a pivot olt or rivet 9.
Loose y connected with the inner end of the shank 7 by means of an eye 10 is the curved end of a jaw operating rod 12, the other end of which projects through a guide passage 13 formed in the end of the stock 1 opposite to that on which the jaws are mounted and which communicates with an outwardly Haring recess 14 also formed in said end forming a seat for the knob of the rod. The end of the rod 12 projects a slight distance beyond the end of the stock and has secured thereto a knob or handle 15 by means of which the rod 12 is operated 'or forced inwardly to open the movable jaw 5. This extension of the operating rod through the handle end ofthe wrench stock adapts the wrench for use in corners and close places, such as holes in a wall or ceiling, the jaws being opened by a simple push on the projecting knob 15.
On the rod 12 within the recess of the stock is arranged a stiff coil spring 16, the outer end of which is connected to the rod 12 near its jaw carrying end while the opposite end of the spring is connected to a rivet or other suitable fastening device 17 arranged in the stock of the wrench, as shown.
A wrench constructed as herein shown and described may be quickly opened and engaged with various sizes of pipes and when so engaged will always grip the pipe with a rm hold and will not slip or Work loose thereon, the arrangement of the teeth in the jaws being such that the wrench may be turned in the usual manner to obtain a fresh grip on the pipe, as will be understood.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A pipe wrench comprising a hollow stock, a fixed jaw formed on the outer edge of said stock, a pivotally-mounted, movable jaw arranged to coact with said lixed jaw, said movable jaw having an elongated shank projected into said hollow stock, a springretracted operating rod slidably mounted in said stock and connected at one end with the shank of said movable jaw and normally projecting through and beyond the end of said stock opposite to that on which the jaws are mounted.
2. Apipewrench comprising astock having formed therein a longitudinal recess open through both ends thereof, a fixed jaw on one end thereof, a movable jaw pivotally mounted in said stock in position to coact with said iXed jaw, a shank on the inner end of said movable jaw projecting into the recess of said stock, an operating rod loosely connected at one end to said shank and slidably mounted at its other end in a guide passage formed in the end of the stock opposite to that on which the jaws are mounted and normally projecting beyond said end,a knob or handle formedv on the projecting end of said rod by means of which the rod is moved forward and the movable jaw opened, and a coiled pull spring connected at one end to said rod and at its other end to the stock to exert a pulling action on said rod to retract it and close the movable jaw.
