COLD-AIR-INLET REGULATOR FOR FURNACES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MARGH, of Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cold-Air- Inlet Regulators for Furnaces 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved cold air regulating device for furnaces,-the object of the invention being to provide a device to be placed at the entrance end of the cold air flue of a furnace, which will eifectually prevent the passage of air from the furnace on account of suction which might be created by wind blowing `across the inlet end of the cold air flue.
A further object is to so construct the device that it will operate automatically to insure the proper passage of cold air inwardly through the cold air flue, regardless of the direction in which the atmospheric currents may blow. I
A further object is to provide a device of the character mentioned, which will be simple in construction, simple and cheap to manufacture and which will effectually. perform the functions for which it is intended.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a cold air inlet regulator embodying 'my improvements; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.
1 represents a rectangular frame which may be conveniently made of wood and adapted to inclose a cellar window, and with which the cold air flue of a furnace may be connected in any suitable manner. Rectangular frames 2*?) are secured to the respective ends of the frame 1, and these frames 2-3 are secured together at their outer ends. The frames 1, 2, 3 thus form a V-shaped frame- Work adapted to roject outwardly from the cellar window. 'fhe frames 2 3 are covered with wire netting 4 and the to of the framework is covered bya roof v5, pre erably of sheet metal and having sufficient pitch to shed Water. The bottom of the framework is covered by a V-shaped sheet metal floor 6 having perforations 7 to permit the escape of any water which might enter the device through the wire netting sides. A deflecting vane 8 located within the device and disposed vertically, is hinged or pivotally supported at the apex of the frames 2 3.
From the construction and arrangement of parts above described, it will be readily seen that if the wind is blowing from one direction, it will enter through one of the wire netting sides, and force the deflector against the opposite side so as to prevent the passage of air through the wire netting on that side. Currents of air will thus be prevented from passing through the device,-entering one side and escaping through the other,-but will be compelled by the deiiector to iiow through the cold air flue to the furnace. No suction can, therefore, be created by air currents flowing across the outer end of the cold air flue. In the case of air currents blowing in a direction toward the apex of the device, the deiiector will be made to assume an intermediate position, and air will thus be permitted to enter through both screened sides.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein shown and described.
I-Iaving fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cold air inlet regulator for furnaces, comprising a frame having open work sides, and a pivotally su ported vane arranged to cover one or the ot er of the open-work sides or to occupy an intermediate position according to the direction of the wind.
2. A cold air inlet regulator for furnaces, comprising a frame, a closed roof and means operating automatically to control the passage of air through one or the other of the openwork sides, or through both dof said sides simultaneously.
3. A cold air inlet regulator for furnaces, comprising a frame work having outwardlyprojecting convergent open-work sides, and a swing vane pivotally supported at the convergent end of the framework, said vane adapted to be made to cover one or the other open work side, or occupy an intermediate position b the action of the Wind.
