CHAIR.
APPLICATION rum) no. 4, 1906.

ATTORNEYS UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BARNETT JACKSON, OF NEWFI-ELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
To ulliuhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BARNETT JAoKsoN, a citizen of the United States, and
lowingis a fu a resident. of Newfield in the county of Pot: ter andState of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and 1m 'roved Chair, of which the folfl, clear, and exact description; This invention relates to chairs.
The object of the invention is to produce a I chair of simple construction, having improved means forlattaching the legs, back and braces in' position; the general pur ose of the invention being to produce a 0 air which will have in weight.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.- A Reference is to be had to the accompany mg drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective 'of a chair constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section throu h'the upper portion of the chair shown in ig. 1, a portion of one of the legs being broken away and shown in section; Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross section through one of the legs and.illustrating the manner of mounting the braces therein; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through great strength though 'light the chair seat and running in a direction from the front toward the rear.
Referring more particularl to the parts, 1 represents the seat frame 0 ,a chair, which frame is preferably formed of sheet metal which is stamped so as to present a central opening 2 and a rounded edge or curved :fiange 3extending com letely around the .'frame.- At the corners o the frame 1, which frame is of substantially rectangular form, 1e sockets 4 and 5 are provided on the under si e of theframe; These are formed'of suitable metal, and are secured in any suitable manner to the under side of the flange 3. The sockets 4 are disposed at the front of the .chair, while the sockets 5 are dis osed at the rear, as indicated. These soc ets receive the up er extremities of the legs 6, and the sides of the legs are provided with recesses 7 which receive. sockets 8 which are substantially similar to, the sockets-4 and; 5 aforesaid. 'The sockets 8 are disposed opposite to each other, as indicated and afford means Specification of Letters Patent.

for attaching horizontal braces or rungs 9 which connect the le s and brace them in the usual manner. A On t e upper side of the seat frame 1 and in alinement with the sockets 5, back .sockets 10 are provided, and these sockets receivethe side bars 11 of the back, which are set therein in the manner indicated.
Intermediately disposed between the sockets 10, I provide a plurality of sockets. 12, which are of small size, and in these intermediate sockets, back slats 13 are received, which extend u wardly between the side bars 11. The si e bars 11, together with the back slats 13, sup ort a head-rest 14, which is provided on its ower edge with sockets 15 which receive the ends-of .the bars 11, and sockets 16 which receive the slats 13. The sockets 15 are similar to the sockets 1O afore- 16 are similarto the sockets 12.
' The chair is provided with a bottom 17, of
cane or similar material, which is attached to the upper side-of the frame in any suitable manner.
A'chair constructed as described will be found to be very strong at the joints, while at the same time it is inexpensive to manufacture and put to ether.
Attention is ca ed to the fact that the sockets 5 and 10 are in alinement with each other, so that a weight resting'upon the back will be received b the frame 1 directly over the rear legs. This arrangement enables a frame of ve 10 ed, whic is very desirable. Attention is a so called to the fact that the flange 3 does not only extend along the front and sides of the chair, but also extends'across the rear edge. The rimary object of this flange on d frontis to prevent the forming of a sharp edge, which might be uncomfort able to a person sitting in the'chair, and it also improves the appearance of the chair. At the rear, however, this flange performs an important function in stiffening the frame .90 A light construction to be emv transversely, so as to take any strains which may come-upon the back between the rear 1e metal, formed with a rearwardly projecting base-flange 18, and it is to this flange that the sockets 12 are attached- The up er edge and ends of the rest are formed, a so,
into a rearwardl projecting flange '19 which v The head-rest 14 is made out of sheet.
is rounded like t e flange 3 of the seat frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure-by Letters Patent:
- 1. A chair, consisting of a sheet metal seat frame having a downwardly curved flange extending entirely arounddt and provided with a central opening, a bottom secured to the frame over the opening thereof, sockets.
projecting from the under face of the frame at the front and rear and between the margin and the central opening, legs engaging the sockets of the frame and provided with socking the sockets of the head rest and the sockets on the upper face of-the seat frame.
2. A chair, comprising a seat frame, sock ets projecting from the under face of the seat frame at the front and rear, the sockets being at a distance from themargin-of the frame,
legs engaging the sockets of the frame and provided with sockets projecting therefrom,
rungs engaging the leg sockets, sockets proj ectingfrom the upper face of the seat frame at the rear thereo the end sockets being larger than the intermediate sockets and in alinement with the rear leg sockets, a head rest rovided with sockets projecting downwar y from its lower edge, the endlsockets being larger than the intermediate sockets,
and side bars and slats engaging the sockets of the head rest and the sockets on the upper face of the seat frame.
' 3. A chair, comprising'a metal seat frame having a downwardly curved flange extending entirely around it, sockets secured to the under face of the seat frame at the front and rear, the sockets being at a distance from the margin of the frame, legs engaging the sockets of the seat frame and connected by rungs,
- sockets projecting from the upper face of the seat'frame at the rear, the end sockets, be-
ing larger than the intermediate sockets and in 'alinement with the rear leg sockets, a
metal head rest having a curved flange at its upper edge and ends and a base flange, sockets projecting downwardly from the base flange of the head rest, the end sockets being larger than the intermediate sockets, and
side bars and slats engaging the sockets of the ead rest and the sockets onthe upper face of the seat frame. I
In-testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses".
