To all whom it may concern:

:Be it known that lI, `FRANK J. STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Chalk-Line Holder, of which the following is a specification.

My invention `relates to anew and useful chalk lino holder, wherein I :provide rotatable zbodiesiof chalkbetween which the line is adapted to pass and against the side faces of which the said line is adapted to contact.

It `further `consists of means `for properly feeding the `two vbodies of chalk evenly against'the line .so that `practically the entire amount of chalk will `be-consumed.`

My present invention is-to overcome these defects and I broadly mount `two bodies of chalk so that the same may rotate and the line in its passage therebetween contacts with the side faces of the bodies and which being rotated will cause the entire side surfaces to contact with the line, `not only thoroughly and perfectly chalking the same but also causing an even wear to the surfaces which prolonge the use of the bodies and permits practically the entire amount of chalk being consumed, and by suitably feeding the two bodies they are always in proper position for operation.

While I have shown in the drawings a form for carrying out my invention, it `willbe evident that other instrumentalities may `be employed which will produce the same results and I desire therefore to make such changes as will come within the scope of my invention and I do not wish to be limited in every instance to the constructionas herein shown and described.

In the present instance the casing l and cover 2 are provided with ythe cutaway portions 6-6 and 7-7, the former serving as a journal for the shaft or rod S and thelatter for the shaft or rod 9.

Mounted on the shaft 8 `are the disks l0 serving as a reel for the line 11 one end of which maybe secured to said shaft S or the disks 102. The free end of the line is passed through a guide 1.2 which-is carried on the casing, and is passed out through an opening 1.3 in the present instance in the cover 2.

14 designates springs or arms suitably supported4 and bearing against the disks 10 and serving to prevent improper movement thereof, thus acting as a brake -for the reel `and line.

Mounted upon the shaft 9, are the two bodies of chalk 15 and 16 between which the line is passed and which in the present instance are circular in cross section, and be* tween which and mounted upon the shaft is a washer 17, the `purpose of which is to prevent the adjacent surfaces of the bodies 15 and 16 from contracting.

18 and 19 designate springs situated on the outer side of the bodies 15 and 16 respectively bearing against the same and tending to hold said bodies in close relation, feeding the same as they are worn and forming a resilient bearing therefor, whereby a sufli cient play is allowed as the line passes between the said bodies,

The shaft 8, in the present instance is hollow and is provided with a pin 20 extending across the same and fitting the interior of said post is a strip 21 having a bent up end 22 thereon which is adapted, at the proper time, to engage with the said pin 20, said bent up end serving as a hook, as will be evident. The said strip 21 is normally seated within the shaft 8 as best seen in Fig. 2, but when it is desired to rewind the line 11 after it has been unwound from the reel 10 by pulling out the crank arm strip 21 the hook 22 engages with the pin 2O and the said strip assumes the position seen in full lines, Fig. 4. Upon the outer end of said strip is pivoted the knob 23 which can be turned in as seen in dotted lines, Fig. 4, when not in use, and when in the vposition seen in full lines, can be grasped by the operator and by turning the strip 21, thereby the shaft 8 is rotated, carrying with it the drum or disks l0 and the line will be rewound.

The operation is as follows: The line 11 is mounted upon the shaft 8 between the disks 1() which serves as a reel and the line is passed through the guide 12 between the bodies of chalk 15 and 16 and through the opening 13 in the casing, the end being provided, if de sired, with a suitable ring or grasping device 24. When it is desired to use the line by pulling upon the same, it will be unwound from between the disks and passed between the bodies of chalk contacting with the side face thereof and asv the same are loosely mounted upon the shaft 9 the said bodies are rotated upon said shaft and by reason of the contact with the line, the amount of contact being governed by the springs 18 and 19 by reason of this rotation of the bodies, the outer surface thereof appearing evenly upon the line and all portions of the said surface will contact evenly therewith so that the line is not only thoroughly chalked but the side surfaces of the bodies are worn evenly, thus permitting the entire chalk bodies to be utilized, since the springs 18 and 19 continue to feed them as they are worn and at the `same time to prevent grooves or other inequalities being formed in said chalk bodies with the consequent results.

As before described, in order to return the line in position on the shaft 8 between the disks 10 the crank arm 21 is utilized to turn 'the shaft in the proper direction, it being 2. In a device of the character described, a pair of rotatably mounted bodies of chalk, a line adapted to pass between said bodies and against the side surfaces of which it contacts, and means for holding said bodies in proper position with respect to said line.

In a device of the character described, a pair of rotatably mounted bodies of chalk, a line adapted to pass therebetween and to rotate the said bodies in its passage whereby the side surfaces of said bodies are brought into contact with said line, and means for holding said bodies in proper position with respect to said line.

In a device of the character described, a pair of rotatably mounted bodies of chalk, a line adapted to ass therebetween and to rotate the said bo ies in its passage whereby the side surfaces of said bodies are brought into contact with said line, means for holding said bodies in proper position with respect to said line, and a reel or radial support for said line.

5. In a device of the character described, a pair of rotatably mounted bodies of chalk, a line adapted to ass therebetween and to rotate the said bo ies in its passage whereby the side surfaces of said bodies are brought into contact with said line, means for holding said bodies in proper position with respect to said line, a ree or radial support for said line, and a tension device for said reel.

6. ln a device of the character described, a casing, a reel rotatably mounted in said casing, a line on said reel, a guide for said line, a shaft carried in said casing, a pair of rotatable bodies of chalk mounted upon said shaft and between which the said line is adapted to pass, whereby the same contact with the side surfaces of the said bodies and said bodies being adapted to be rotated by the movement of said line.

7. In a device of the character described,-
