Description

5mm @anni @ma EDWARD H. 'GARRIGUE S, Ol" ST. LOUIS, lMISSORI.y
' Letters Patent No. 87,406, dated ,Ma/rch 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPARK-ARRESTERS.
To' all whom it mayooncem:
\ Be it known that I, EDWARD H. GAnnreUns, of St. Louis, in the county ofSt. Louis, and State of Missouri,
f have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spark- Extinguish er; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled iii the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying (hawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for extinguishing sparks from chimneys and smokestacks; and
It consists in forming such chimney or smoke-stack with a perlbrated sheet or section', which section forms a portion of the stack, or chimney, and in securing to such perforated section a revolvingr jacket, with wings thereon, whereby the air is allowed to enter the chimney, or stack, through the j ierforations, and condense thesteam which is exhausted into such stack, or chimney, and thereby extinguishthe rising sparks, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 represents the smoke-stacks of a steamboa-t, or of a steam-engine.
Figure 2 isa cross or horizontal section, through the line a: :1: of fig. l.
Similar'letters of reference vindicate corresponding parts.
A represents the'stack, orchimney.
B is the perforated section, the perforations extendL ing entirely roundthe stack.
@represents a cylindrical jacket, which supported by a projecting flange, d, but over the flange and the bottom` of the jacket there is a loose recessed collar, e.
Within the collar, and between the bottom of the jacket@ and the collar el, friction-rolls, or balls, are placed, as .seen in the drawing, at g.
F represents wings, more or less in number, on the jacket C. v
- A portion of the jacket is cut away, so as to expose a portion ofthe perforated section B to the atmosphere, (one-fifth of the circumference, more or less,) the balance of the perforated section beingcovered by the jacket, so that the airis excluded.
The portion of the perforated stack which is eX- posed by the jacket is seen more distinctly in flg. 2, and
marked h. l
. Itwill be seen thatrthe wings will keepthe open partrof the jacket h facing the strongest current of air, as the drum revolves easily on the friction-rolls beneath it. v
The action of theA jacket on the stack is similar to that of the ordinary smoke-jack, its position being governed by thestrongest current of air.
It is well known that the exhaust steam from the engine on steamboats and locomotives, and frequently in stationary engines, is discharged into the smoke-stack, or chimneys, for the purpose of increasing the draught.
Such steam, by my arrangement, meets the fine jets of air which pass through the perforations in the stack, and is condensed, producing thereby an atmosphere within the stack sufficiently damp to extinguish the sparks which enter the stack, so thatif they are forced out by the upward draught, they fall harmless to the ground..
This spark-extinguisher can be applied to all smokestacks and chimneys where steam is used, as described, with the greatest advantage, and with entire safety as regards the discharge of sparks from the stack.
I claim as new, and ,desire to-secure by Letters Patent- The jacket C, with wings F and` rollers E, constructed and arranged, with reference to the perforated section B, as herein shown and described;
' E. H. GABRIGUES.
