UNITED STATES ELDRED MARSHEL HIBBLER, OF CLARKSDALE, MISSISSIPPI.
CANE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed November 10,1906. Serial No. 342,786.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELDRED ll/IARSHEL HIBBLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident o'l' Glarksdale, in the county of Coahoma and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cane-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in cane cutters,
and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a sectional edge view of a cutter embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a side view of the lower portion of the handle with the blade extended in alinement with the handle in full lines and with other positions of the blade indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a detail section on about line 44 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a detail section on about line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail side eleva tion of the butt end of the blade.
In carrying out the invention I employ a handle A of suflicient length to permit the operator to stand upright in wielding the cutter, and this handle may preferably be provided near its upper end with a nib B similar to the nibs employed on scythe snaths so the operator may wield the cutter with both hands. At one end the handle A has a head G which is slotted at G from its extremity forming the parallel jaws D, and this slot (7 opens out of the oppos te sides of the head 0 as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing so the blade presently described may be adjusted to either side of the handle. The jaws D between which the blade is secured are reinforced on their outer faces by the side plates E and these side plates and the jaws D are perforated by alined bolt holes which are arranged in a circular series and are adapted to receive the bolts F applied as shown in the drawings. I also prefer to employ a bolt G at the center of the circular series of bolts F and provide suitable openings therefor in the side plates E and the jaws D of the head G, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 of the drawing.
The blade II is provided near its butt end with a circular series of openings H for the bolts F and with a central opening H for the bolt G so the blade may be adjusted to and secured in any suitable position in the head of the handle and this blade H is sharpened on both edges h and h so it may cut in either direction, the edge hbeing hooked at k near the free end of the blade and the end of the blade at b being also sharpened as shown in Fig. 2.
By the described construction it will be noticed the cutter when adjusted as shown in Fig. 1 may be used for a draw cut on the edge h or a pushing out on the edge h and the end k may be used for cutting in small places where a blade with simply a side edge cannot be operated. Thus, the blade applied as shown will cut any way it is moved, facilitating its use and rendering the handling of the cutter easier because the operator can vary the cuts from time to time in such manner as to relieve muscles which would be quickly tired if the operation were limited to one movement. Again the blade may be adjusted to any suitable angle with respect'to the handle and may be secured rigidly in such adjustment so that I can place the blade in the handle to project from one side or the other or straight out in alinement with the handle and with either the hooked edge h or the opposite edge 7/ nearest the operator as may be desired.
I claim The cane cutter, herein described, comprising a handle having at one end a head slotted from its extremity forming parallel jaws and with the slot opening at the opposite sides of the head, the side plates fitted against the outer faces of the parallel jaws, said side plates and the jaws being provided with alincd bolt holes aranged in a circular series, the blade provided at its butt end with a circular series of bolt holes registering with those in the parallel jaws and side plates, said blade having its opposite side edges and its end sharpened and provided on one of its edges at the free extremity of the blade with a hook like portion, and bolts passing through the openings of the circular series, and a central holt connecting the blade and the handle and forming a pivot upon which it may be adjusted to different positions relative to the handle, substantially as set forth.
