Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
A ii ti fil d October 16, 1906. Serial No. 339,173-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. EARNEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bedford, county of Bedford, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a oer tain new and useful Improvementin Keepers for Harness-Straps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in keepers for harness straps, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective de vice which may be applied to any portion of the harness and serve to hold the ends of the straps in place and may be adjusted along the straps of the harness or easily removed and others substituted in their place when occasion requires.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective of my improved keeper, and Fig. 2, a similar view showing the keeper applied to a part of the harness and holding the end of the strap in place.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the body of the keeper which may be made of sheet metal or wire and is so bent as to form the hook B adapted to engage one edge of the harness strap 0 while the upper section of the base embraces the opposite edge of the strap lying upon its upper surface as clearly shown in Fig. 2. I
The upper section of the base is turned up as indicated at D and has a slot formed therethrough for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
E represents the cap having a tongue F formed thereon adapted to pass through the slot formed in the upturned end D of the base and serving as a guide to hold the cap in place, and permit it to be moved back and forth for attachment and detachment. This cap also has the prongs G formed thereon adapted to pass beneath the upper section of the body, and these prongs in conjunction with the tongue will hold the cap in place, the tongue also serving to separate the ends of the straps when two straps are used.
Such a keeper may be secured to any portion of a harness and the hook end B of the base crimpcd down so as to hold the base firmly in position when the cap may be quickly attached as before described, and when attached the end of one or more straps may be passed therethrough and kept in place.
Where it is desired to apply my improvement to a narrow strap the base A may be dispensed with and the prongs -G passed under the strap, the tongue F lying on the upper surface thereof while the bent end H of the cap engages the opposite edge of the strap. When the cap is thus secured in place the free end of the buckle strap may be passed through the cap above the tongue and thus kept in place.
It is obvious that this keeper may be quickly put on or taken off of a harness or adjusted to any position desired and the cost thereof is very small since it may be made of sheet metal or wire and will also be ornamental to the harness.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
In a device of the character described, a base adapted to be secured to a portion of a harness, an rip-turned section D having a slot formed therein, a cap, a tongue formed upon said cap adapted to pass through said slot, and prongs alsoforlned upon the cap for passing beneath the upper section of the base to hold the cap in place, as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two Subscribing Witnesses.
JAMES C. EARNEST. Witnesses GEO. M. PUncELL, SIMON OIIENHEIMER.
