EDWIN A. OARKIN AND JOSEPH F. JEFTS, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
CUTTING AND RIPPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
a atented ling. 13, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWIN A. CARKIN and .Tosnrrr F. .lnr'rs, citizens of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Cutting and Ripping Devices, of which the following is a specification reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
Our invention relates to improvements in devices for cutting thread, twine and the like, ripping seams and hems, cutting off buttons and for similar purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which may be removably engaged with the edge of a work table, desk, counter or .the like and which will be very convenient and effective in use.
Further objects and advantages of the invention, as well as the structural features by means of which these objects are attained will be made clear by an examination of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cutting device applied to the edge of a table, counter or the like; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device; Fig. 3 is a top plan view and Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section taken on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 in Fig. 2.
Our improved cutting or ripping device comprises a cutting blade or knife 1 mounted in an attaching frame 2 which latter is in the form of a spring clip so that it may be readily slipped over the edge of a work table, counter, desk, or the like A as clearly shown in Fig. l. The attaching frame or clip 2 as here shown is formed of a piece of resilient wire bent upon itself at its center to provide the circular loop or ring 3, the straight parallel portions 4 which engage the opposite sides of the knife 1, the right angularly bent and oppositely projecting portions 5, the straight diverging portions or arms 6 adapted to bear upon the top of the support A, the angular end portions 7 which engage the edge of the support A and the straight parallel portions or arms 8 which engage the bottom of the support A. The arms 8 terminate in eyes 9 which are connected to eyes upon the ends of a cross piece 10. The latter rigidly unites the two sides of the clip and together with the arms 8 form a spring jaw which securely retains the device upon the support. The end portions 7 of the frame are disposed at an acute angle with respect to the arms 8 and at an obtuse angle with respect to the arms 6 to allow for the bevel or curvature of the edge of the support A and to give the jaw more resiliency. The knife or cutting blade 1 is in the form of a substantially rectangular block of steel or other suitable metal formed in its forward edge with a V-shaped notch having its sides oppositely beveled to provide the cutting edge 11, the upper end of which terminates in a point 12. The knife is secured between the straight portions 4 of the wire frame or clip by a metal plate 13 passing around the bottom of the knife and said portions 4 and having its ends 14 bent up over the latter and secured by a rivet 15 as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The construction, use and advantages of the invention will be readily understood upon reference to the drawings. While the device may be used for a variety of purposes it is especially designed for an attachment to a work table or desk for use in ripping open seams and hems, cutting thread, cutting-buttons from garments, etc. It may be readily applied to tables or the like of varying thicknesses owing to the resiliency of the jaw of the clip and when applied the ring 3 and the arms 6 of the frame hold the blade or knife rigidly in an upright position so that the thread or other part to be cut or ripped may be pressed against the cutting edge 11.
It will be noted that the clip is of substantially U- form and that its upper jaw member or base portion 2 is fiat and will be held firmly against the flat surface of a table, counter or the like support by the engagement of the other jaw with the opposite face of said support. The ring 3 lies in the plane of said base member and is pressed firmly against the support A. This construction enables said ring to be used not only as a finger piece but also as a combined guide and tens on device for a cord or twine. The latter use of the ring 3 is illustrated in Fig. 1, in which is shown in dotted lines a piece of twine passing through the ring and held down upon the support A thereby. It will be noted that the knife blade 1 projects upwardly or outwardly from the base portion 2 of the frame and that its cutting edge 11 is directed toward the closed end of the U-shaped clip or frame. The knife is so arranged in order that there will be no danger of pulling the device off of its support when the knife is being used and in order that the jaws of the clip may be flat so that they will not mar the support. This construction also obviates the necessity of the jaws having projections to enter retaining seats in the support. Pressing a piece of cord or twine or a seam against the cutting edge of the blade tends to more effectively retain the clip or frame upon the support rather than to loosen or dislodge the same.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a clip of substantially Uform to take over the edge of a table, counter or similar support, and a knife blade projecting from one member of said clip and having a cutting edge turned in the direction of the closed end of the clip.
2. A device of the character described comprising a spring clip having substantially fiat jaws connected at one end and adapted to take over the edge of a table, counter, or similar support and a knife blade carried by one jaw or member of said clip and projecting outwardly from the same and having its cutting edge turned in the direction of the connected ends of said jaws, substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described comprising a knife blade and a spring clip carrying the same and having a flat base member and a combined guide and tension ring or loop disposed in the plane of said flat base member and adapted to be pressed against the support engaged by said clip, substantially as described.
=L-A device of the character described comprising a spring clip having a flat base member adapted to be pressed against the support engaged by the clip, a knife carried by said base member and combined guide and tension ring or loop arranged adjacent to said knife and carried by said base member and lying in the same plane therewith, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
5. A device of the character described comprising an attaching frame or clip formed of resilient Wire andhaving a spring jaw member and a flat base member provided with a combined guide and tension ring or loop, the latter bemg in the plane of said fiat base member and a knife carried oy said base member, substantially as described.
0. A device of the character described comprising a knife or cutting blade, an attaching frame formed of resi1i ent wire and bent to provide a guide loop, parallel portions to engage the opposite sides of the knife and a spring jaw, and a metal plate for securing the knife between the parallel portions of the frame, substantially as shown and described.
7. A device of the character described comprising a spring clip of substantially U-form constructed of resilient wire, a knife projecting from one member or jaw of said clip and a metal plate passed around a portion of said clip and secured to the opposite faces of said knife for retaining the latter upon said clip.
8. A device of the character described comprising a spring clip of substantially U-form having a flat base member, a spring jaw member and an angular connecting portlon forming an obtuse angle with respect to the base member and an acute angle with respect to the jaw member and a knife carried by said base member.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses. 1
