UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM GRIMM, OF MORTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO INTERLOOKING FENCE COMPANY,
OF MORTON,
ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
WIRE-FENCE FABRIC.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed Jnnel4, 1905. Serial No. 265,283.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GRIMM, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Morton, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Fabrics; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to improvements in wire-fabrics, and relates particularly to a fabric wherein the strand wires or stringer wires are connected by stay-wires which extend from selvage wire to selvage wire, and where the stays and stringers intersect and are intertwisted, to produce a mesh in which the apertures are preferably rectangular in shape or approximately so.
The invention has for its object a series of intermediate stringer wires, and selvage wires consisting preferably of a pair of wires intertwisted to form a cable strand; of a series of stay-wires which extend from selvage strand, to selvage strand and where the stay wires intersect the intermediate strand wires they are provided with right angle or longitudinal portions which are connected to said strands by a right and left intertwist. The said stay-wires where they intersect the selvage or cable strands are provided with right angled or longitudinal portions which are intertwisted with the wires forming the cable strands by a continuous intertwist in one direction.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a cable strand or selvage wire, made preferably of two intertwisted wires, at the bottom and top of the fabric, one wire of which is provided with barbs positioned so as to appear on the said selvage strands intermediate the said stay-wires.
Further objects and aims of the invention will appear in the following description, and in the drawings hereto attached forming a part of this application in which:-
Figure l is an elevation of a'portion of my improved fabric; Fig. 2 is a detail of a portion of the improved fabric illustrating the manner of applying the barbs thereto, Fig. 3'is a detail of a portion of the improved fabric illustrating a modification in the construction.
In the drawings, the fabric is shown with the stringer wires spaced at graduated distances apart, but it is understood that they may be spaced at uniform distances, if desired.
The intermediate strands or stringers wires are indicated as 1, and the selvage wires, whether plain cable strands, barb-wire cable strands, or single wires, are denoted as 2.
3 refers to the stay-wires, formed previous to introducing them into the fabric with the alternately arranged short vertical portions 4, and right angled or longitudinal portions 5. The stay wires are formed with the relatively short right angled portions 5 spaced apart in correspondence with the strand wires 1 and the selvage wires 2, so that one of the intermediate right angled portions comes opposite each of the strand wires and the right angled portions at the end of the strand wires comes opposite the selvage wires. The right angled or longitudinal portions 5 of each stay which intersect the strands or stringers 1 are intertwisted by any suitable means therewith by an alternate right and left intertwist, and the upper and lower right angled portions 5 of each stay which coincide with and lie parallel to the selvage wires 2, which are each formed of two intertwisted wires, are intertwisted therewith.
The selvage or cable strands 2 are preferably made of two stringer wires, which may or may not be intertwisted at the time the stay wires are introduced; it 7 5 is preferable however to intertwist the selvage Wires at the same time as the stays are intertwisted therewith. Such cable strands may be made plain as in Fig. 1, or if desired these cable strands may be provided with the barbs 6 positioned intermediate the stays, as seen in Fig. 2, or only the top or the bottom cables need be provided with these barbs. 1
The form of stays 3 above described, when introduced into and intertwisted with the strands 1, and selvage wires 2, produces a fabric, wherein the twisted portions lie in horizontal lines parallel with and above and below each other, and the alternate strands 1 also lie in substantially horizontal lines parallel with and above and below each other. The said alternate strands I do not, however, he in perfectly horizontal lines, since the plain portion of one strand between the twists thereof lies on a line extending downwardly slightly from left to right, whereas the succeeding or adjacent strand 1 has its plain portions extending upwardly slightly on a line projecting upward from left to right, as clearly shown in the two uppermost strand wires 1 in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This same idea is carried out alternately with adjacent strand wires or stringers.
Fig. 3 illustrates a fabric, where the selvage wires formed of more than one wire is omitted, and substituted in its stead is a heavy single strand of wire. To
connect the stays in this instance, the ends of the stays are wrapped or coiled about the selvage, as indicated at 7.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A wire fence fabric composed of selvage members, a plurality of intermediate strand members spaced apart, said selvage members each composed of two wires adapted to be intertwisted, stay wires each formed of a plurality of alternately vertical portions and right angled portions,
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM GRIMM.
