PUZZLE-BOX.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RILEY H. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented a new and useful Puzzle-Box; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention pertains to a puzzle box having several objects in view. which will be hereinafter set forth.

The invention aims, as a primary and essential 0bjcct, to provide a device by which perfumes, medicines and other articles of merchandise, preferably of small compact form, may be packed and shipped: this box may be used as a jewel case if desired. This box may be manufactured of fancy woods of any configura tion, suitable to the parties manufacturing the same and to the trade.

The invention aims as a further object to provide a box of the above character which may be utilized as a rattle, by the use of a small ball or balls placed within the same; a further object of the invention is to produce a compact, neat box of a simple and efiicient structure, but yet difficult to open, when once closed.

This invention comprises further objects and combinations of elements which will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out by the appended claims.

To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction, combinations of features, elements and advantages, reference is to be had to the hereinafter set forth description and the accompanying drawings in connection therewith, wherein Figure 1. is a perspective view of the puzzle box, illustrating the same as closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is asectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the two sliding closing members for the ends of the outside casing, forming the body of the box.

Making renewed reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several illustrations, by figures, 1 designates the outside casing, forming the body of the box; this outside casing is open at its ends, as at 2 and 3, the opening 2 being narrower in one direction than the opening 3, but of the same length as the opening 3, in a direction at right angles to the first-named direction. The longitudinal edges 4 of this opening 2 are beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, which beveled portion is designed to be engaged by the beveled raised portion 5 integral with the sliding closing member 6, which is to act as a sort of a top to the box, and which is to be inserted within the casing 1, prior to the insertion of the Ushaped closing member 731 Projecting from the lower face of the closing member 6 are a pair of ribs 8, designed to be engaged by the upper ends 9 of the U-shaped closing member 7, that is, when it is inserted in its proper place, as shown in Fig. 2. The outer walls 10 of the casing, that is the ones parallel with the longitudinal edges of the openings 2 in the top thereof are slightly tapered upon their inner faces, as shown at 11, that is the distance between the inner faces of the Walls 10 is greater at the top than at the bottom, for the purpose of securely holding the U- shaped closing member in place. The closing member 6 is first inserted in the casing, through the larger opening thereof, in such manner as to cause the raised portion 5 to engage the smaller opening of the casing, then the U-shaped closing member is inserted through the larger opening of the casing until its upper ends ongage the ribs of the closing member 6 the sides of the U-shaped member being pressed inwardly to permit their entry into the casing; the engagement of the upper ends of the U-shaped member and the ribs is caused by the angled surfaces 12, of the casing, which force the upper ends of the U-shaped member toward the said ribs, as will be clearly manifest. To remove the closing members a little inward pressure of the member 6 is required, as will be clearly understood.

Upon the inner faces of the walls 10, as at 12, is a surface extending at an angle to the inner faces of the walls 10, which walls are slightly tapered, as before stated. These surfaces 12 are for the purpose of causing the ends 9 of the U-shaped closing member to engage the ribs 8 on the closing member 6, as will be evident from the drawings.

It is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be employed in the construction and embodiment thereof, combinations of features, and elements, without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of the invention covered by ,the claims thereof; it being understood that whatever variations or modifications are employed must fall within the scope of the appended claims.

From the foregoing, the essential features, elements and the operation of the device, together with the simplicity thereof, will be clearly apparent, and, when manufactured in accordance with the invention, an inexpensive market will be easily obtained therefor.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful by the protection of Letters Patent, is:

1. In a box of the type set forth, an outside easing open at both ends thereof, closing members for the open ends, said closing members constructed to be inserted through the same end for closing the box.

2. In a puzzle box, an outside casing having its ends open, one of said openings being narrower in one direction than the other opening, a pair of closing members for closing the outside casing, one of said closing members having a raised portion to be received by the smaller opening of the outside casing.

3. In a puzzle box, an outside casing having its ends open, one of said openings being narrower than the other opening and having beveled edges, a pair of closing members for closing the outside casing, one of said closing members having a beveled raised portion to be received by the smaller of the two openings.

4. In a puzzle box, an outside casing having openings at each end thereof, one being smaller than the other, the smaller of the two openings being provided with a bevel upon two of its edges, a pair of closing members for closing the openings, one of said closing members having a raised portion with two beveled edges to be received by the smaller of the two openings.

5. In a box; an open ended casing; closures therefor; one of said closures having ribs; the other closure being Ushaped and constructed to fit and frictionall engage said ribs.

In a puzzle box, an outside casing havingopenings at each end thereof, one being smaller than the other, the smaller of the two openings being provided with a bevel upon two of its edges, a pair of closures for the openings, one of said closures having a beveled raised portion to be received by the smaller of the two openings, the closure having the beveled raised portion being provided with a pair of ribs, the other closure being U-shaped and having its ends to fit and frictionally engage said ribs when the same is pushed home.

7. In a puzzle box, an outside casing having openings at each end thereof, one being smaller than the other, the smaller of the two openings being provided with a bevel upon two of its edges, a pair of closures for the openings, one of said closures having a beveled raised portion to be received by the smaller of the two openings, the closure having the beveled raised portion being provided with a pair of ribs, the other closure being U-shaped and having its ends to engage said ribs when the same is pushed home,

and means formed upon the inner surface of the outside' casing upon two walls thereof for securely holding the U shaped closure in place by causing the same to engage frictionally the ribs upon the closure having the beveled raised portion.

8. In a box; an open ended casing; closures therefor; one of said closures having ribs; the other closure being U-shaped and constructed to engage said ribs; said casing having means to cause the Ushaped closure to bite upon the ribs.

9. In a box; an open ended casing; closures therefor; one of said closures having ribs; the other closure being U-shaped and constructed to engage said ribs; said casing having an angled surface to cause the Ushaped closure to bite upon the ribs.

10. In a box; an open ended casing; closures therefor constructed to be inserted through the same end for 010s ing the box one end of said casing having frictional means to force one of the closures into enggement with the other to hold both closures in place.

11. In a box; an open ended casing; closures therefor constructed to be inserted through the same end for closing the box; said casing having an angled surface to cause one of the closures to frictionally engage and hold the other closure in place.
