IMPROVED GRAIN-FEEDING- .AND SCOURING-APPARATUS.
The Schedule-referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
i also serve as a feed-regulator, either for grain or ground stufl's, such as middlings, 850.
It consists of a hollow conical scouring-cylimler, surmounting a hollow hemispherical or other similarlyformed base, which serves as a reservoir, through which a vertical shaft works, which is formed with a series of perforated scouring-plates within the cylinder.
The bottom of the reservoir is provided with an opening, through which the grain passes, and with a feedregulating apparatus.
A draught-fan is arranged, in combination with the scouring-apparatus, to be used, when desired, to facilitate the passage of the grain.

Figure 2 represents a view, partly in plan and partly in horizontal section.
Similar-letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a conical cylinder, which may be made of any suitable material, but which I prefer to make of glass, through which the operation may be inspected.
It is connected at its base with a hemispherical or other suitably-formed reservoir, B, and provided at the top with a funnel-shaped receiver 0.
D represents a scouring-corc, made of a series of horizontal perforated plates, connected by peribrated cylinders, and surmounted by a perforated cone, and supported 011 a vertical shaft, E, by which. it receives rotary motion, and on which it may be adjusted.
Instead, however, of the described form, the core may be made of any other suitable form; but I prefer the use of perforated plates in some form.
Between the funnel O cue the cylinder, a sliding gate, F, is provided, to regulate, to some extent, the admission of grain to the cylinder.
The bottom of the reservoir is provided with a dischargc-passage, G, below which a conical disk, H, is secured to the shaft, while ashort tube, I, the internal diameter of which is about equal to the greatest diameter of the disk, is adj ustabiy connected to a projection from the bottom of the reservoir, by screw-threads or otherwise, and provided with a set-screw, for fixing it at any desired point with reference to the disk.
By raising or lowering the tube, the feed may be regulated as desired, or the tube may be made stationary, and the disk be made adjustable, and the same result will be produced.
From the tube I the grain is discharged into a tube or spout, K, by which it may be conveyed to other cleaning-apparatus, or to the stones for grinding.
A riddle or coarse screen may be attached to the top of the funnel G, or near the top, for separating straws, sticks, or other such matter.
To. facilitate the draught or flow of the grain, I propose to combine with my improved apparatus, as above described, a fan-blower, which I prefer 'to arrange after the plan herein represented.
L represents a fan, arranged on the base of the machine, having a vertical shaft, M, for giving it rotary motion.
Air is received through a passage, N, and conveyed upward to the spout O, by which it is .directedin a downward course, to meet the grain asit is discharged from the scour-er, producing a draught, by suction, through the machine.
P represents a valve for regulating the blast of air.
It is believed that a machine constructed as above described will serve an excellent purpose for scouring grain, preparatory to passing it into screens and other secondary cleaning-mechanism, especially as it will, by
reason of the securing and the effectual feeding-mechanism attached, cause the feed to be regular, which is an important'matter, inasmuch as many cleaning-machines, especially smut-machines, will break and chop the grain in a very damaging degree, when, by reason of an unsteady feed, they are not supplied, at all times, with a sufficient quantity.
