Description
GIDEON JOHNSON HAMAGHER, OF NEW DUNDEE, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BICYCLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed March 26,1907- serial No. 364.701.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIDEON JonNsoN HAMACHER, of the village of New Dundee, in the county of Waterloo, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, contractor, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bicycles, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple means for driving a bicycle by means of compressed air, and it consists 01' a cylindrical casing supported in the frame or the wheel, a central shaft journaled in the walls of the casing, a drum having vanes located upon it, pumps operated by suitable treadles to force the against the vanes to rotate the drum and suitably arranged valves for the same, as hereinafter set forth in the following specification.
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a bicycle with my driving mechanism. Fig. 2, is an enlarged perspective detail of the driving mechanism. Fig. 3, is a cross sectional view through Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a sectional face view of Fig. 2.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is the frame of the bicycle.
B is a cylindrical casing forming the connection between the front and rear main braces 2 and 3.
B is a shaft journaled in the walls of the casing and to the outer end of which is secured the main driving sprocket-wheel 4, (see Fig. 3).
C is a drum secured to the shaft within the casing and provided with ratchet shaped notches O forming vanes against which the air is directed'to rotate the drum.
D D are pump cylinders located and secured to each side of the casing.
D are the piston rods.
D is a cross lever pivoted centrally to the standard D secured to the casing B.
E and E are the pedals pivotally secured to the ends of the levers D F is a by-pass connecting the upper ends of the pump cylinders to a central passage F leading into the drum. The by-pass is provided with valves F F I is a metallic packing located to each side of the passage F in the drum to insure of the air acting on the vanes. H is the exhaust pipe.
Having described the principal parts involved in my invention I shall briefly describe the operation of the same. By pressing the pedal E and lever D located on one side of the casing downwardly, air is forced by the pump D into the casing B against the vanes of the drum revolving the drum on the supporting shaft, such shaft being connected by the usual sprocket gear to the rear wheel of the bicycle. The operation is repeated with the other pedal located on the other side of the casing alternately to revolve the drum.
From this description it will be seen that I have constructed a very simple means for driving a bicycle by compressed What I claim as my invention is:
1. In :1 bicycle or similar vehicle, the combination with the main frame and the driving axle provided with vanes, of a casing secured to the main frame and surrounding the vanes on the axle and having a suitable exhaust outlet, pump cylinders secured to the casing and communicating with the interior thereof, pistons and piston rods for the said cylinders and treadles secured to the piston rods as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a bicycle or similar vehicle, the combination with the main frame and the driving axle provided with vanes, 01 a casing surrounding the vanes and having a suitable exhaust outlet, pump cylinders secured to each side of the casing and communicating with the casing by means of openings provided with suitable valves, pistons and piston rods for the pumps, a lever centrally pivoted beneath the casing and to the piston rods at each end and treadles secured to the ends of the lever as and for the purpose specified.
GIDEON JOHNSON HAMACHER.
