Description

titel 5mm l et Westera JAMns ARMSTRONG, OF BUOYRUs, lAND OLIVER DRAME, Or WYAN- DOT COUNTY, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 86,800, dated Februar/ry 9, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent` and making part of the sama.
To all whom (it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES ARMSTRONG and O'LI- vnR DAME, the said DAME being a resident of Vyandot county, Ohio, and the said ARMSTRONG 'a resident of Bucyrus,'ir 1 the county of Crawford, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Knife, Saw, Screw-Driver, and Door and Window-Fastener; andwe do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure l is a side view;
Figure 2, a top View;
Figure 3, a bottom view of the instrument when closed 5 Figure 4, a side view, when arranged as a saw;
Figure 5, a vertical section, through the line :vx of iig. 2, when arranged for use as a screw-driver;
Figure 6, a side View, when placed in position pre paratory to" being,used as a door-fastener; and 1 Figure 7 is a side view when in position as a doorfastener. i
The nature of our invention consists in combining, ina compact form, a knife, saw, screw-driver, scale, or measure, and door and window-fastener, it being so compactly arranged that it can be carried in the pocket.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, We will proceed to describe its construetion and operation` In the drawinga represents the outer case.
b, the inner case.
c, thefrivet which secures the cases c and b together. d el', the blades.
c, 'the saw.
f, the screw-driver.
g," the scale, or measure, seen in g. 3.
h, the spurs, or sharp points, on the outer case a.
t, the spurs, or sharp points, on the inner case b.
j, the rivet which holds the saw in the case b.
k, the rivet against which the lshoulders of the'saw and screw-driver rest when opened.
l, the shoulder on the screw-driver.
m, the slot in the inner case b, in which the rivet n slides.
The inner case b is composed of four thin pieces of metal, b b b2 b3, placed parallel to each other, there being a space between each one.
The knifeblade d is between the pieces b and b, and blade cl between the pieces b2 and b3, the rivet c passing through the outer case a, yinner case b, and one end of the blades d d. L
c c are pieces between b andb, and between b2 and b5, which extend under the blades,'and act as baksprings, and also serve to keep the parts of the inner case apart. p
Between the pieces b and b2 the saw and screwdriver are placed, the saw c being held in the case by the rivet j.
In each of the side pieces b and b is a slot, m.
The rivet npasses through the lower end ofthe screwdriver f, its ends resting in the slots m m.
The outer case a enoloses three sides of the inner case when they are closed or folded together.
On the bottom of the outer case is a scale, as seen in iig. 3.
We' will now proceed to describe its various positions and operations.
Fig. l shows the instrument as aknife, with one blade open. i y
Fig. 2 shows it when entirely closed up.
Fig. 4 shows it in position to be used as a saw, the shoulder o on the saw resting against the rivet k.
Fig 5 shows it `when arranged Aas a screw-driver, the shoulder Z on the screw-driver resting against the rivet k. v
v VY/'hen it is desired to use it for fastening a door or window, the instrument is opened, and the points h i', are placed against the floor and door, as seen in iig. 6, and then, by pressing against the back of the case, the points 71, and i are forced into the Wood, and the backs 0f the outer and inner cases are brought into line with each other, the end of the' outer case a striking the shoulders on the blades d d', thus forming a tight joint. When they are in this position, the end of the screw-driver f is forced forward into the outer case a, thus holding the two casesarl and b open, as seen in iig. 7. This ,last movement is the object of hinging the screw-driver in the slot m, so that it can be moved forward and act as a key.v
Having thus fully described our invention,
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi l. The combination of the outer and inner cases, a and b, and the key f, substantially as shown and described. n
2.. The combination of the inner case b, blades d d, screw-driver,.or key j, and saw e, substantially as shown and described.
3. The screw-driver, or key f, when constructed and operating substantially as shown and described.
4.' The points h i, on the bevelled ends of the outer and inner cases a and b, substantially as shown an: described. f JAMES ARMSTRONG.
Witnesses: OLIVER DAME. Y.
