HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1907.
Application filed June 13, 1907. Serial No. 878.852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. TURNEY, a citizen of the United States oi America, residing at Greensburg, in the county of Westmoreland and State oi Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters, oi which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in heaters, and more particularly to that type of heater wherein gas is employed as a heat generating medium.
The invention has for its object to provide a heater wherein novel means is employed for heating a large supply of cold air admitted to the heater.
My invention aims to provide a heater having a high degree of eiciency obtained by a minimum expendi ture oi lfuel. To this end, I have devised a heater, or as it'may be termed, a furnace, particularly designed for heating halls and compartments7 the heater or furnace being suitably supported in the basement oi a building, whereby cold air will have free access to the bottom of the heater. The top of the heater can be connected direct to a register in the floor of a building or by conduits or i'lues to the compartments oi the building.
The detailed construction entering into my invention will be presently described and then specically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the heater. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view oi the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the heater, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a deilecto'r detached from the heater.
To put my invention into practice, I construct the lheater of sheet metal, part of which can be galvanized to provide a durable structure. The heater consists of a rectangular casing 1 having its upper edges bent to provide sockets 2 for a cone shaped hood 3 adapted to connect with the register or conduit (not shown). Secured to the front and rear sides 4 and 5 of the casing 1 are cold air conduits 6 tapering from their lower ends to their upper ends. The conduits are secured to the casing 1 by bolts and nuts 7 or similar fastening means, and are adapted to convey cold air to the interior o the casing through the medium of openings 8 formed in the casing I. i
The interior of the casing 1 directly beneath the openings S is provided with brackets 9 for supporting a burner 10. The burner comprises a tapering casing 11 having its sides flanged, as at 12, to rest upon the brackets 9. In the upper end of the casing 11r is arranged a piece oi gauze 14 providing two layers 15 and 16 against which the ignited gas impinges, the gauze tending to retard the products oi combustion until they are consumed, and for spreading the ignited gas in order that it will Contact with the cold air admitted to the heater. The lower end oi the heater is located directly over a gas jet 17 carried by a gas supply pipe 18 arranged in the casing 1, the supply of gas to said gasjet being controlled by a conventional form of valve I9.
Fitting in the casing 1 above the burner l0 is a deflector consisting of a iront plate 20 and a rear plate 21, said plates being flanged, as at 22, and bent, as at 23 to engage in the sockets 2 of the casing I. The iront and rear plates 20 and 21 extend downwardly in iront ofthe burner 10 and provide cold air conduits 24 in iront and in the rear of the burner. v
Secured to the confronting faces oi the plates 2O and 21, as at 25, is a V-shaped deiiector 26 adapted tospread the ignited gas or products oi combustion, causing the same to commingle with the cold air admitted to the casing 1 through the conduits 6 and the conduits 22n formed by the plates 20 and 21 and the flanges 22, also the lcold air passing upwardly upon the sides oi the burner between the delector 26 and the Plates 20 and 21.
The iront side 4 of the casing l is provided with an opening 27 alining with an opening 28 formed in the ront plate 20 of the delector structure, Hinged to the front side4 oi the casing l is a door 29 having a channel shaped extension 30 upon its inner side for closing the opening 27 of the plate 20, without interrupting the passage of cold air in the conduit 22*L at the iront of the heater. The door 29 is provided with a latch or lock 31 oi a conventional form.
It will be apparent that I have devised a heater or furnace consisting of practically four parts, namely, the casing 1, the hood 3, the burner 10 and the V-shaped delector 26 located above the burner. These parts are easily and quickly assembled, and by providing the hinged door 29, the gas within the heater orurnace can be safely ignited.
Having ully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a heater, the combination with a gas supply pipe and jet, of a casing located over said pipe and having its upper edges hanged to provide sockets, a hood mounted in the sockets of said casing, tapering cold air conduitsL carried by the sides of'said casing and communicating with the interior thereof, a tapering burner casing detachably mounted in said heater casing and housing saidgas jet, gauze arranged in the upper end of said burner casing, a V-shaped delector detachably mounted in said casing and having front and rear plates providing air conduits, and means whereby easy access can be had to the interior of said heater.
2. A heater consisting of a casing, a tapering hood carried by the upper end of said casing, tapering cold air conduits carried by the sides of said casing and communicating with the interior thereof, a tapering burner casing located Within the first mentioned casing, gauze 'arranged Q saires in the upper end of said burner easing, a Vshaped de Hector detaehably mounted above said burner easing' and having plates providing air conduits, and means whereby easy access can be had to the interior of said casing.
A heater consistin:` of a casing, a hood carried thereby, cold air conduits arranged at the sides of said casing and communicating with the interior thereof, a burner casing detachably mounted in the first mentioned casing, a V-shaped delector located above said burner easing and having' plates providing Cold :lr eunduis, :1nd means 1 whereby easy :leeess can be had io the interior ol' szlirl Rising.
In testimony whereof I niIX luy signature iu the )vreseuee of two witnesses.
