To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, WALTER W. LINDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looms, of which the following is a specification.r
This invention relates to looms and a principal object is to provide a simple and improved picker motion the operation of which shall be thoroughly effective.
With this and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited; but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings-Figure l is an end view oi a loom embodying the improvements of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of one end of the loom. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation showing the central portion of the lay and related parts. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing in elevationthe cams whereby the picker motion is operated. i

The frame l of the improved loom is of ordinary construction. 2 is the lay; 3, 3 the lay swords and 4 a crank-shaft which is driven in the usual manner and is connected with the lay by means oi links or connecting rods as 5. The crank-shaft 4 is provided with a loose pulley 6 and a fixed pulley 7 for the reception of power from any suitable source; 8 represents the lever for shifting the belt 9 upon the pulleys.
The head of the lay is provided with bearings for a transversely movable shaft or rod l0 which is adapted to project at either end of the machine so as to engage the hooked end l1 of a lever l2; it being understood that one such lever is mounted at each end of the frame of the machine. Each lever l2 is connected by a stirrup or catch 13 with a picker strap 14, the latter being guided over a roll I5 and connected with a lug strap 16 which latter is suitably connected with or mounted upon the picker stick 17. The lower end of each picker stick is connected by a strap or flexible member 18 with a spring 19 that serves to move the upper end of the picker stick laterally in an outward direction from the frame.
The central lay-sword which is specially designated 3 is formed with an enlarged portion constituting a frame 20 having a stub 21 upon which is journaled a spur-wheel 22 having a .ratchet wheel 23 connected therewith; the frame 20 is provided with bearings for a shaft 24 carrying a pinion 25 that meshes with the spur-wheel 22. Upon the stub 2l is pivoted a lever 26 having a paWl 27 that engages the ratchet wheel 23; said lever being connected by a link or rod 28 with a suitable fixed point, such as a back girth of the frame. The shaft 24 carries a pair of oppositely disposed cams or eccentrics 29, 29 that engage levers 30, 30 which are fulcrumed in the frame 20 as clearly seen in Fig. 4 of the' drawings; the levers 30, 30Vare connected by flexible members such as straps 3l, 31/ with the laterally slidable or movable rod l0, said straps or flexible members being guided over pulleys 32, 324 It will be seen that when the position of the levers 30, 30 is reversed by the actuating cams, the rod 10 will be moved laterally or endwise in its bearings so that one end of said rod will be disposed in the path of the hooked end of the lever 12 at one side of the machine.
As the lay moves to and fro when the machine is in operation, the transversely slidable rod 10 will alternately engage the hooked end of one or the other oi the levers l2 at the two ends of the frame of the machine, and the picker sticks will thus be alternately operated to throw the shuttle, as will be readily understood.
The vibrator 33 is fulcrumed at 33St upon the stud 34 that supports the cloth roll 35 and the take-up roll 36; the weft hammer upon the'upper end of the vibra- .tor coperates in the usual manner with the tail of the weft fork 37 mounted upon the slide 38. The lower end of the vibrator carries a pivoted pawl 39 adapted to engage a lug or stud 40 upon the lay sword 3 whereby the stop motion lever will be actuated.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the picker movement, the stop motion, and the takeup movement are each operated directly by the movement of the lay in a simple and eiiicient manner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a loom the combination with a transversely slidable rod operatively connected with the lay, of a picker lever having a hooked end disposed in the path of the transversely slidable rod, a picker stick, connections between the latter and the picking lever, and means for actuating the transversely slidable rod.
2. In a loom a transversely slidable rod supported in bearings adjacent and parallel to the lay, a pair of levers fulcrumed upon a movable member connected with'the lay, suitably guided flexible members connecting said levers with the slidable rod, oppositely disposed cams or eccentrics engaging and actuating said levers, and means for operating the cams or eccentrics.
3. In a 100m a lay sword having an expanded portion forming a frame, a shaft journaled in said frame and having oppositely disposed cams or eccentrics, levers pivoted upon the lay sword and engaging the cams or eccen- 10 tries, a transversely slidable rod supported adjacent to the lay, suitably guided exible elements connecting said rod with the cam engaging levers and means for imparting to the cam carrying shaft an intermittent rotary motion by the reciprocatory movement of the lay.
