To provide the proper draft for the burner b carried by the tank b the pleito g is pierced adiacent to the edge thereof, allowing sufficient suriace to engage the globe, and the segments so formed are turned upwards in the usual manner.

Between the sections a-c and thc oil tank b a well is formed, thus providing .a clear space entirely surrounding the tank and ,its appurtenances. 1n the ordinary lantern, this well is found, but if a special type of lantern is made auch Vshould be provided preferably,
such being the most convenient place for hiding or obscoring the colored auxiliary globe. In addition to the eeon'oiny oi' a single set of lanterns instead o1' a doulile set throughout., it will be observed that the use oi the` auxiliary globe will serve to avoid a loss oi time or eoniusion of signals, in ease of einergeneies,
it is not my intention to limit the invention to the preeise details oi eonstruetion shown in the drawings, sueh being merely the adaptation of the invention to one well known type o1' lantern. The invention is Capable oi' sueh variations as may he necessary to adapt ii to dilierent styles of lanterns, \\`hile I have shown and described an ordinary oil burner as the source of light, it is apparent that such is not material to the invention except broadly, any source of light being all that is ,required Having described the invention, what I eiaiin as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent is'.
