l WORK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17', 1907.
Application led May 8,1907. Serial No. 372,545.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARIE MARGARET O. DILL- MAN and MARY LOUISE AUGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Work-Holder, of which the following is a specific'ation. y
This invention relates to work holders and is particularly designed for holding embroidery hoops and the like.
The object o f the invention is to provide a simple, durable and compact device of "this character'which is attractive in appearance and which can be readily carried within a satchel or work bag,
Another object is to provide a clamp capable oi being` readily attached to a table or chair and which can be adjusted annularly and in the direction of its length.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.-
In the accompanying drawing is sho-wn the preferred form of the invention.
Said drawing is a perspective View of the clamp, a portion thereof being broken away, the chair arm to which it is secured and the embroidery hoops held by the clamp being shown in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, 1 designates a shank having jawsZ extending therefrom and one of these jaws is provided with a set screw 3 on'which is swiveled a head 4. Shank 1 has a tubular extension 5 slidably and revolubly mounted there-` on and the outer end of this extension is preferably solid and has a iiat working face 6 at the inner end of which is formed a supporting shoulder 7.
An arm 8 is formed with or secured to the extension 5 and has a jaw member 9 pivoted thereto and having a flattened face l0 designed to coperate with the surface 6 for clamping upon an object placed within the device. An adjusting screw 11 extends loosely through the member 9 and is threaded to engage the extension 5. A spring 12 is interposed between extension 5 and. the jaw member 9 and is designed to swing the member 9 away from the extension when the screw l1 is turned in one direction. A set screw 13 extends into the extension 5 and is designed to bind upon the shank 1 so as to prevent the extension from moving independently thereof.
In using the device herein described the same may be attached to a table or to the arm of a chair, as indicated at 14, by placing the jaws 2 at opposite sides of the object to be clamped and turning the screw 3 so as to bind upon said object. 1f embroidery hoops such as shown at 15 are to be supported by the clamp they are placed between the extension 5 and the jaw member 9 so as to rest on shoulder '7 after which the screw 11 is turned so as to cause the parts to bind upon the hoops. The device can then be adjusted by loosening the screw 13 whereupon the extension 5 can be moved longitudinally or rotated in order to bring the hoops into a desired position.
What is claimed is:
A work holder comprising a shank, jaws integral therewith and extending therefrom, a clamping device carried by one of the jaws, a tubular extension slidably and revolubly mounted upon the shank, an arm extending from and surrounding the extension, means projecting through and engaging the extension and arm for securing the extension against movement upon the shank, said means also constituting a fastener for the arm, a jaw member pivotall-y connected to the arm, the ends of said tubular extension constituting a jaw disposed to coperate with the jaw member, means for adjusting said jaw member toward the extension, and resilient spacing means interposed between the extension and jaw member.
'In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto aixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
MARIE MARGARET 0. DILLMAN. MARY LOUISE AUGER.
