To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that l, JAMES W. SUTTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to hats, and the invention has for its object to provide a novel campaign hat that can be illuminated, to display various colors and signs carried by the hat.

My invention aims to `provide a metallic hat that can be adjusted to lit heads of various sizes, the metallic hat being provided with a suitable lamp or candle for displaying various colors and signs carried by the hat. In this connection, my improved hat is particularly designed for campaign purposes, the hat being worn in parades and at such functions, where patriotic colors are displayed and the political interest of persons promoted. To this end, l have constructed a metallic hat to represent a stiff silk hat, the crown of the hat being provided with a plurality of openings covered with transparent colored glass or paper, upon which can be printed or cut out the names of prominent persons. lhe hat is adapted to be otherwise decorated with national colors, and within the crown of the hat is located a lamp or candle adapted to illuminate the interior of the hat crown and cause the transparent colors thereof to be plainly seen. The arrangement of the lamp or illuminating medium insures perfect safety when the hat is worn, and the novel construction of the hat prevents any discomture on the part of the wearer. i

The detailed construction of the hat will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig.' 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the hat,

and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the illuminating medium thereof.

To put my invention into practice, l construct the crown of the hat of a piece of sheet metal 1 having over-lapping edges 2 secured together by a rivet or similar fastening means 3. The lower edges of the sheet of metal 1 are provided with a plurality of openings'i toreceive malleable lugs 5, carried by the vertical edge 6 of a rim 7, said rim being constructed of a sheet of metal having its ends secured together by a tongue S bent to retain the ends of the arm' together. The rim in shape conforms to an ordinary hat rim and has its juncture with thc crown of the hat covered by a band 9, preferably made of fabric having patriotic colors. The inner vertical sides G of the rim are provided with a leather band 10, adhesively or otherwise secured, whereby the metallic edges of the hat will comfortably rest upon the head of the wearer.

The sheet of metal 1 forming the crown of the hat has its upper edges provided with a plurality of openings 11 covered by transparent colored paper or glass 12 held in place by a metallic band 14 soldered or otherwise secured to the crown of the hat, as at 15. The crown of the hat upon its front side is also provided with an opening 16 adapted to be covered with a piece of material 17 cut out, as at 18, to form the letters of a persons name.

The upper edges of the crown of the hat support a metallic cap 19 having a plurality of ventilating openings or perforations 2O formed therein and a plurality of slots or depressions 21. Suspended from the depressions 21 oi the crown 19 are arms 22 carrying a lamp or candle cage 23 constructed of metal and mica. The arms 22 are shouldered, as at 24, to receive a deflector plate or shield 25 adapted to prevent the cap 19 from being injured by the flame of the lamp or candle carried within the cage 23.

lt is apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, that l have devised aine-proof hat having a luminous crown for displaying various colors or signs carried thereby.

It is obvious that various signs and Configurations can be used in connection with the hat to adapt it for various purposes.

By removing the rivet 3, which is constructed of fra-ngible material, the crown of the hat can be easily adjusted by overlapping the ends of the rim 7 and securing said ends by the tongue S. The depending edges of the cap 19 can be bent inwardly to engage the upper edges of the crown, or another cap can be substituted.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A campaign hat consisting' of a crown constructed of a sheet of metal having` over-lapping edges, a rim constructed of a piece of metal having its ends adjustably secured together, lugs carried by said rim for connecting the same to said metallic crown, a cap iittng upon the upper edges of said crown, a lamp cage suspended from said cap within said crown, said crown having a plurality of openings formed therein, and transparent material covering said openings.
