Description
Z 'el v te tainted ALEXANDER HUMPHRIES. OF B ETHEL, OHIO. Letters Patent No. 86,402, dated Fcbrua/ry 2, 1869; antedated .Tamm/ry 2.0, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPOKING-MACHINE.
*mF--m The Schedule referred to in these Letlezs Patent and making part of the same.
To 'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HUMPHRIES, of Bethel, Clermont county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Spoking-Machiue; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
` The present invention relates to certain improvements on the spoking-machine, patented by myself' and J ohn Keethler, on the 30th of J uly,l867.
My said improvements consist, iirst, in providing one oi' the suppciting-standards with adjustment to and from the other, for the purpose oi' adapting the machine to hubs of different lengths; secondly, in hingiug the adjustable frame, by which the set oi' the spokes is gauged, upon the front of the machine, and supporting it by open notches or crotches at the rear, by which means the work of driving the spokes into the hub, and bringing them to a uniform dish or set therewith, can be both better and more expeditiously performed than was' possible with said machine.
Figure l is a vertical section of my improved machine, in the lplane of the hubs axis.
Figure 2 is a top view ofthe same.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the rear portion of th'e front side of the machine, omitting the lower pol'- tion.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the pillowblocks.
A A are two sills supporting one h'xed standard, B, and one adjustable standard, O, the latter beingsecured to said sills, by means of nuts D D' and screws E E, which screws occupy slots c c', in the feet of the standard C, said feet being of sufficient length to give the standard a iirm bearing upon the'sills.
Each standard has near its lower end'a rail, F, traversed by a screw, G, for the vertical adjustment of' a pillow-block, H, whose upper edge has a notch, l1, with convergingr sides, so as to receive, hold, and centre a hub of any diameter.
The pillow-blocks H are restricted to a vertical adjustment by grooves c.
Framed permanently into thev standards B and C,
somewhat higher than and just outside of the pillow-4 blocks, are two rails, I I, which are traversed by a' holt, J, having a crank, j, at one end, and being screwthreaded, j', to enter a nut, t', on-the rail I.
A hub, Z, (already bored, turned, and mortised,) being laid in the pillow-blocks H, is secured therein by inserting and turning the screw J, until the ends of the hub are held fast by the rails I I', and is clamped firmly down by the two spring-bars L, whose free ends are engaged in racks M.
*My rest or gauge N, instead of being hinged over the but-end of the hub, or at the rear of the. frame, so as to oblige a double manipulation to clear it from the spoke, as iu the patent alluded to, is hinged at the front sident' the frame upon a bolt, O, which bolt is screwthreaded at one end, and provided with a nut, o, whereby the two posts ofthe standards C can be pressed toward' each other, in order to impart sufficient friction to the hinge to enable the gauge 'to be self-sustaining at any position in which it may he placed, when open or lifted from the spoke.
The free end of the gauge has crotches P, which straddle a bolt, O', whose oiice it is to. support the gauge at its lowest or eiiective position.
These crotches serve to guide the gauge to its place upon the bolt O, and to hold it rmly on said bolt,
while permitting the easy elevation of the gauge when desired.
The standards B O are perforated, to allow the bolts O O to be placed higher or lower in the said standards, to suit the length ot spoke-and the gauge-frame has a series of perforations, It, to enable the adaptation of the machine to a hub of any length.
The gauge N has a sliding rest, Q, which is set toward or from the spoke, by means ot' a cranked or other screw, R, so as to give any desired uniform dish to the spokes. 4
In order to correcta contrary spoke, (one disposed to lean away from the true dish,) I` have provided a lever, S, pivoted to the frame at S', and whose free end can be caught in a ratchet, T, on the standard.
Attached to this lever, at or about its mid-length, is
a chain, U, .that terminates in ahook, u, adapted to be engaged round the rear side of the spoke, so as to enable the operator to draw the spoke firmly against the rest aforesaid.
I claim 'herein as new, and of my inventionl. In a spokiug-rnaohine, the combination of the sills A A', stationary and movable standards B C, and hubclam ping devices J L M, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The adjustable gauge N Q R, provided with crotches P, resting upon the pin O, in combination with the spoke-setting devices S T U, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
ALEXANDER HUMPHRIES.
